Chapter 5 - Chloe’s Audacity

By Thursday afternoon, the story had broken across the regional press, though the full horror of the hammer attack had not yet reached the national wires. The Mercer public relations team had attempted to release a statement claiming that I had suffered "minor injuries from an unfortunate fall on private family grounds."

Chloe believed the statement.

She truly, completely believed that money and prestige were plastic things that could be reshaped by sheer arrogance. She had lived twenty-six years without ever hearing the word *no* from Harold or Eleanor. She believed that the men of Adrian Vale’s class were governed by an unwritten code: they avoided public embarrassment at all costs, they chose the smoothest path forward, and they replaced broken ornaments with identical, shinier ones.

At four o'clock, Adrian was sitting in the executive boardroom of Vale International’s downtown headquarters, listening to a briefing from Detective Vance and his legal counsel.

The double frosted-glass doors swung open.

Chloe Mercer walked into the boardroom.

She had bypassed the security on the ground floor by showing her family identification badge and telling the lobby guards that she was "the bride’s sister, delivering urgent personal documents to Mr. Vale."

She was dressed to kill.

She wore a bespoke emerald-green crepe dress that hugged her frame, her hair blown out into loose, golden waves, her face painted with flawless precision. She smelled of white musk and expensive foundation. She carried a leather portfolio under her arm, walking toward the head of the sixty-foot mahogany conference table with an expression of soft, tragic, breathless vulnerability.

"Adrian," she whispered, her voice trembling with practiced theatricality.

The twelve men in the room—corporate lawyers, forensic accountants, and private investigators—froze.

Detective Vance’s jaw tightened. Marcus Kane, standing behind Adrian’s chair, reached inside his jacket for his radio.

Adrian did not flinch. He did not rise. He simply lifted one finger, signaling his team to remain still.

"Miss Mercer," Adrian said, his voice entirely devoid of tone. "You bypassed three security checkpoints to enter this room. That is a class-three civil trespass."

Chloe took two steps closer, ignoring the other men, her eyes fixed entirely on Adrian’s face. She let a single, perfect tear slide down her left cheek.

"Adrian, please... you have to listen to me," she said, her voice dropping into an intimate, urgent purr. "The press is tearing our family apart. The police... they don't understand what happened. Evelyn... she lost her mind yesterday. She found out that you had spoken to father about the harbor expansion without her, and she went into a frenzy. She started destroying her dress. When daddy tried to stop her with the tools he had brought to fix the armoire, she threw herself onto him. She’s sick, Adrian. She has been unstable for years."

One of the senior corporate attorneys gasped softly. Detective Vance shook his head in sheer disbelief.

Adrian remained motionless, his hands folded on the polished wood. "Continue."

Chloe took heart, stepping right to the edge of the table. "You have the international shipping gala tomorrow night. The governor is attending. The German investors are landing at nine in the morning. You cannot appear alone, Adrian. You cannot appear with a bride whose face is... who looks like a monster. It will destroy the stock valuation. It will make Vale International look like a tragedy."

"And what is your proposal, Chloe?" Adrian asked. His tone was so smooth, so impossibly polite, that Chloe mistook it for surrender.

She placed her hands on the table, leaning forward, letting the emerald crepe dip slightly.

"I can step in," she said softly, her eyes wide, shining with sickening ambition. "We don't cancel the wedding. We announce that Evelyn had an emergency medical deferment, and to preserve the alliance between our families, I am taking her place. I know all the guest lists. I know the seating charts. I can wear the backup Vera Wang gown that came in this morning. I will give you the children Evelyn is too old to bear, Adrian. I will give you a wife who doesn't embarrass you in front of the board."

The room was so quiet that the hum of the HVAC unit thirty floors up sounded like an industrial turbine.

Adrian looked at Chloe for five full seconds.

He didn't blink. He didn't show anger. He simply studied her with the clinical detachment of an entomologist observing a cockroach on a slide.

"Marcus," Adrian said softly.

"Yes, Mr. Vale?"

"Is the conference room audio and visual recording system active?"

"Yes, sir. Four high-definition lenses, synchronized with redundant cloud storage."

Adrian turned back to Chloe.

"Miss Mercer, your father is currently being held in Cell Block C of the County Central Jail without bail. Your mother is under house arrest at the estate, supervised by two court-appointed marshals. And you have just walked into a room containing the lead detective of the Major Crimes Division, the managing partner of the state’s largest criminal litigation firm, and three forensic audio recording devices."

Chloe’s expression froze. The tear dried instantly on her cheek. "What?"

Detective Vance stood up from his chair, pulling a small silver recorder from his pocket and tapping the screen.

"Miss Mercer," Vance said, his voice hard as iron, "you have just attempted to suborn witness tampering, offered a fraudulent statement regarding an active felony assault investigation, and provided direct testimony demonstrating consciousness of guilt and conspiracy to defraud a corporate merger."

Chloe backed away from the table, her face draining of all its color, the emerald dress suddenly looking absurd, clownish, pathetic. "No... no, I was just... Adrian, I did this for you!"

Adrian stood up.

When he rose to his full height, his broad shoulders blocking the panoramic view of the harbor below, the room seemed to shrink around him.

"You did not do this for me," Adrian said, each word falling like an iron weight. "You did this because you are an empty, envious parasite who spent her entire life feeding on the scraps of your sister’s grace. You wanted her dress. You wanted her ring. You wanted her life. But you do not have her mind. You do not have her heart. And after today, you will not even have her name."

He looked at Marcus. "Escort Miss Mercer to the ground floor. Deliver the conference recording directly to the district attorney’s office to be added to the grand jury indictment for felony conspiracy."

"Adrian! Please!" Chloe screamed as Marcus Kane’s heavy hand closed around her wrist. "Daddy will kill me! We have no money! The banks called this morning! Everything is frozen!"

May you like

"Then I suggest," Adrian whispered, leaning forward until his gray eyes were inches from her terrified face, "that you start learning how to wear something other than silk."
