Chapter 10 - The View from the Balcony

Six months later, the autumn air over Chicago was crisp and clear, carrying the scent of fallen leaves and woodsmoke from the northern suburbs.

I stood on the wide glass balcony of our home—our real home, a sunlit penthouse overlooking the river where the new green-energy shipping terminals were already rising along the South Water docks.

Inside, Lily was laughing as she chased our golden retriever across the hardwood floor, her small red shoes clicking merrily against the wood.

The heavy glass door slid open, and warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind.

“What are you thinking about?” Giovanni murmured, resting his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair.

“I was thinking about table fourteen,” I said, a small smile playing on my lips.

Giovanni chuckled, tightening his hold around me. “Ah. The kitchen doors.”

“If you hadn't walked over that night... if I had just stayed sitting there trying not to cry over my shoes... I wonder where I’d be right now.”

Giovanni turned me gently in his arms so I was facing him. He looked down into my eyes, his expression serious and tender.

“You would have found your way out eventually, Jessica,” he said softly. “You’re a survivor. You just needed someone to hand you the keys to the door.”

I reached up, my fingers tracing the faint, pale line of the scar across his jawline.

“And now?” I asked.

“Now,” Giovanni said, kissing the tip of my nose as the afternoon sun cast a golden glow across the Chicago river below, “we build.”
