Chapter 9 - A New Dawn at Whitmore House

Three weeks later, the snow across the Westchester estate finally melted away under the bright, warm promise of an early spring.

The grand ballroom of Whitmore House was filled with light once more, but the artificial tension of high-society galas was entirely gone. Today, the room was filled with simple, genuine laughter.

It was Lily’s fourth birthday party.

There were no politicians, no sketchy business associates, and no armed guards standing awkwardly near the corners—though Marco and a discreet team of operatives maintained a watchful perimeter outside.

A single, beautiful tier of vanilla sponge cake sat on the center table, decorated with bright pink frosting and four flickering candles.

Ethan Moretti, now looking healthier, happier, and far more relaxed than he had in years, carefully helped little Lily blow out the candles while a small group of children cheered wildly.

Anna stood near the arched doorway of the ballroom, leaning comfortably against the fluted marble column. She wore a sharp, tailored blazer over a dark blouse—no longer a housekeeping uniform, but a symbol of her true authority within the estate.

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

Dominic Moretti stopped beside her, holding two glasses of sparkling cider. He handed one to her, his dark eyes watching his son laugh with the little girl who had saved his life.

"She looks happy," Dominic observed quietly.

"She’s four," Anna replied with a faint smile, taking a small sip of the cider. "Happiness is usually measured in sugar content at this age."

Dominic chuckled softly—a rare, genuine sound that softened the hard lines of his face. He raised his glass slightly toward her. "To new foundations, Mrs. Carter."

Anna clinked her glass against his. "To foundations that don't crack under pressure, Mr. Moretti."

As the children ran off toward the garden to chase butterflies under the golden spring sunlight, Anna felt a deep, abiding peace settle into her bones. The ghosts of her past were buried, her daughter was safe, and the shadows that had once hung over Whitmore House had been swept away forever.
