Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The collective gasp that rippled through the ballroom sounded like wind rushing through dry autumn leaves.
On the stage, Ethan scrambled back to his feet, his face flushed a furious, ugly crimson. He pointed a shaking finger at his brother, his voice cracking with panic. “He’s—he’s delusional! Richard, you’re not well! Security! Get him off the stage, he’s having a medical episode—”
“Shut up, Ethan,” Richard commanded. The single word carried such raw, terrifying power that Ethan actually flinched and fell silent.
Richard turned back to the microphone, his gaze sweeping over the sea of stunned investors and board members.
“For the past eight months,” Richard said, his voice ringing clear and steady across the hall, “my brother Ethan and my mother Eleanor have managed my corporate affairs under the assumption that my spinal injuries were permanent. They have assured this board that I was unfit to lead, unfit to vote, and unfit to oversee the upcoming European merger.”
In the front row, Eleanor stood up, her voice trembling with cold fury. “Richard! Have you lost your mind? You were in a horrific accident! We protected you! We managed this company while you were broken—”
“You managed it into the ground, Mother,” Richard interrupted coldly. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a slim flash drive, holding it up for the entire room to see. “And more importantly, you systematically looted the R&D accounts through shell companies like Apex Holdings to pad your personal offshore portfolios.”
Ethan’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of a mahogany table to keep from collapsing. “That’s a lie! Fabricated documents! He’s unstable—he suffered brain trauma—”
“The documents are encrypted, cryptographically signed by Ethan’s own corporate laptop, and have already been transmitted to the federal prosecutor’s office and the SEC,” Richard said smoothly. He turned his head slightly toward the side entrance of the ballroom.
As if on cue, the side doors opened, and two federal agents in dark suits walked calmly into the room, flanked by local police officers.
The murmurs in the crowd exploded into absolute chaos. Flashbulbs from social media cameras flared in the darkness.
“Ethan Vance,” the lead federal agent announced, flashing a badge as he walked down the aisle toward the stage, “and Eleanor Vance. You are both under arrest for corporate fraud, conspiracy, and the deliberate tampering of executive safety equipment resulting in reckless endangerment.”
Eleanor let out a sharp, breathless cry, collapsing back into her chair as handcuffs were slapped onto Ethan’s wrists. Ethan cursed furiously, thrashing against the officers as they dragged him down the aisle, his designer suit rumpled and his face twisted in pure, venomous hatred as he glared straight at me.
“You!” Ethan screamed, pointing a finger at me across the room. “This is all because of that stupid nurse! You ruined everything!”
I didn't flinch. I stood tall, meeting his gaze with absolute, unshakeable calm.
As the police escorted the Vance family out of the ballroom, the heavy silence settled over the room once more.

Richard stood alone at the podium. He took a deep breath, adjusted his cuffs, and looked out over the stunned investors.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Richard said, his voice calm and commanding. “The merger proceeds as planned. Vitalis Health is open for business.”
