Chapter 7 - Forensic Dissection

The suite at the Brown Palace Hotel was quiet, smelling of beeswax, fresh lilies, and three centuries of old money. Claire sat at the antique mahogany writing desk, her laptop open, the glow of two external monitors illuminating the room as twilight fell over the Denver skyline.

On her left screen was the corporate structure of Vance Capital.

On her right screen was the complete financial autopsy of Ryan Montgomery.

Over the last six hours, as the forensic accountants in Manhattan dug through Ryan’s office servers, the sheer scale of his deception had crystallized. It was breathtaking in its arrogance.

Ryan had not simply fallen for Chloe Martin; he had convinced himself that he was a financial mastermind who could outsmart the very family that had built him.

There were hotel receipts from the St. Regis in Bal Harbour.

Jewelry invoices from Cartier on Fifth Avenue—a diamond tennis bracelet billed under 'Client Development: Institutional Gifts.'

A lease agreement for a two-bedroom penthouse in SoHo, signed three weeks ago, with Chloe Martin listed as the primary occupant and Ryan as the corporate guarantor using Vance Capital’s commercial tax ID.

"He actually thought he was untouchable," Claire murmured to herself, clicking through a folder marked *Confidential/Personal* that the IT team had extracted from Ryan’s private cloud storage.

Her phone rang on the desk.

It was Ryan.

This was the forty-seventh call he had placed since they landed at 10:45 AM. He had sent eighty-two text messages.

*Claire, please. I’m at the Marriott downtown. I don't have access to my corporate card. It was declined at the front desk.*

*Claire, they’ve frozen my personal checking account. I can't even pay for an Uber.*

*You can't do this to me! We are legally married! Half of those assets are mine!*

*Claire, pick up the phone. Chloe is hysterical. Her uncle is calling Marcus. Please, let’s handle this like adults.*

*Claire, I love you. You know I love you. It was a moment of weakness. Let me come to your hotel. Just five minutes.*

Claire didn't block the number.

In legal warfare, you never block an opponent who is actively generating evidence against himself. Every frantic, contradictory, threatening text message was automatically synced to Elena’s cloud server, logged with timestamps to establish a pattern of harassment and financial misconduct.

There was a soft knock at the door of the suite.

Elena walked in, carrying two room-service menus and a thick manila folder.

"The board has been officially noticed," Elena said, kicking off her heels and settling onto the plush velvet sofa. "Nine o'clock tomorrow morning. Ryan has been granted permission to join via video link from his hotel room. Marcus insisted on it."

"Marcus wants him to watch," Claire said, without looking up from her screen.

"Marcus wants him to understand the precise depth of the grave he dug," Elena corrected. "And Chloe’s uncle just resigned from his position at Vance Capital’s regional advisory board. He called Marcus an hour ago, apologized profusely, and stated on the record that he had no knowledge of his niece’s extracurricular activities."

Claire looked up. "And Chloe?"

"Chloe has already retained an attorney," Elena said with a grim chuckle. "A public defender, because her credit cards were also tied to Ryan’s corporate account. Her lawyer called me twenty minutes ago offering full cooperation in exchange for immunity from civil litigation. She’s ready to sign an affidavit confirming that Ryan coerced her into signing those LLC documents under threat of termination."

Claire leaned back in her leather chair, crossing her legs.

"Did he coerce her?"

"Does it matter?" Elena raised an eyebrow. "When the ship goes down, the rats don't negotiate with each other; they try to bite their way onto the wreckage. Chloe realized the moment Brenda called her 'Mrs. Montgomery' that she had hitched her wagon to a dead horse. She’s protecting herself."

Claire looked back at the screen.

On it was a photograph extracted from Ryan’s phone: Ryan and Chloe on a yacht in the Hamptons last July, clinking glasses of rosé against the sunset. Ryan was smiling—that triumphant, self-satisfied grin of a man who believed he had stolen fire from the gods and would never be burned.

Claire remembered that weekend in July.

She had spent forty-eight hours straight in the midtown office, subsisting on cold delivery salads, finalizing the closing documents for the Apollo Logistics acquisition—the very acquisition that had generated the eight-million-dollar advisory fee that funded Ryan’s partnership draw.

*“I’m so sorry I can't be there with you, babe,”* Ryan had told her over the phone that weekend, his voice muffled by what he claimed was the noise of an airport terminal in Chicago. *“These Midwest institutional investors are killing me. I’d give anything to be home with you on the patio.”*

Claire reached out and pressed the delete key, sending the photograph into the digital trash bin.

"Elena," Claire said, her voice clear and bright as a winter morning.

"Yes, darling?"

"Order the steak. And open the Barolo."

Claire shut her laptop with a firm, decisive snap.

"Tomorrow morning, we take back the crown."
