Chapter 7 - The Arrest on Prime Time

At 4:00 PM, the local television stations in the tri-state area broke their regular programming for a live press conference held on the steps of the federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan.

Rain was still misting over the city, but the plaza was packed with hundreds of journalists, camera crews, and citizens holding protest signs that had materialized within hours: **JUSTICE FOR CHLOE** and **ARREST THE STERLINGS**.

Special Agent Marcus Kane stood at the microphone, flanked by the United States Attorney for the Southern District and the Chief of the State Police.

Behind them, illuminated by the harsh white glare of television spotlights, two transport vans pulled up to the curb.

The back doors swung open.

The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding, staccato storm of white light.

Liam Sterling was led down the steps in full orange prison restraints—handcuffs, belly chain, and ankle shackles that clinked against the concrete. His head was bowed, his face swollen and streaked with tears, his once-flawless appearance reduced to a shivering, ruined wreck.

Behind him came Eleanor Sterling, her sable coat gone, her wrists secured with steel cuffs, her eyes darting frantically toward the screaming crowd like a trapped animal.

Reporters shouted over one another, a wall of deafening noise:

*"Liam! Did you beat your pregnant wife with a golf club?!"*

*"Eleanor! How long have you been laundering offshore shipping kickbacks?!"*

*"Is it true Chloe Vance is still alive?!"*

Neither of them spoke. Liam tripped on the bottom step, falling to his knees before two federal marshals hauled him roughly to his feet by his armpits, dragging him past the cameras and into the holding cell entrance.

On the third floor of St. Jude’s Hospital, the television in the waiting room was muted, but the images danced across the glass.

I stood watching the screen, my hands resting in the pockets of my canvas coat.

Beside me stood Dr. Mitchell, his eyes fixed on the television, his face pale with utter disbelief.

"My God, Sarah," Mitchell whispered, looking at me with a mixture of reverence and terror. "Who are you? The news is saying the entire Sterling trust has been dissolved into a federal sanctuary fund. They’re saying the mother is facing life for Arthur Sterling’s death. How did you... how did any of this happen?"

I turned away from the television, looking down the quiet, sterile hallway toward the ICU recovery wing.

"A mother protects her child, Dr. Mitchell," I said simply. "That is the only jurisdiction that matters."

Before Mitchell could reply, the alert tone on his pager chimed. He looked down at the screen, and his breath hitched.

"Room four," he said, turning toward the double doors. "The cooling cycle is complete. She’s coming out of the sedation."
