Chapter 7 - Fractured Alliances

By Wednesday evening, the Holloway family ecosystem had collapsed into open civil war.

It is a curious law of human nature that when a tyrant falls, their court does not mourn them; they turn on each other like starved hounds.

It started with Brenda.

Brenda had driven over to Carol’s house on Tuesday afternoon to offer comfort, still believing that Graham was the villain and Carol was the martyred saint. But when Brenda arrived, Carol was in the middle of a manic rampage, packing her porcelain collectibles into cardboard boxes, convinced the sheriff was coming to seize her house.

When Brenda suggested that Carol simply apologize to Rachel to smooth things over, Carol had turned on her with the venom she usually reserved for outsiders. She called Brenda an uneducated cow, told her that her children were loud and stupid, and revealed that the only reason she had ever tolerated Brenda was because Brenda was desperate enough to do her grocery shopping for free.

Brenda had left in tears.

At seven o'clock on Wednesday, my phone chimed with a message from Brenda in the family group chat.

**Brenda:** *I want everyone to know that Carol Holloway is an evil, ungrateful snake. She has used this family for decades. What she did to Noah and Sophie on Easter was vile, and I am disgusted that I didn't speak up in that moment. Rachel, I am so deeply sorry for how I acted. You have always been nothing but kind to my kids, and I was too cowardly to stand up for you.*

I stared at the screen.

Rachel was sitting beside me on the sofa, helping Noah with his third-grade spelling list. She looked over my shoulder, read the message, and let out a long, quiet breath.

"Well," Rachel said softly. "Hell must have had a hard freeze this afternoon."

"Do you forgive her?" I asked.

"Forgiveness is free, Graham," Rachel said wisely. "Trust is earned on an installment plan. But it’s a start."

Ten minutes later, another message appeared in the group chat.

This one was from Uncle Frank.

**Frank:** *For those wondering why Carol’s car got towed: it wasn't Graham’s fault. It was because Carol stole $240,000 from our daddy’s estate in 1998 and let Richard die thinking the family was broke. I’ve got the receipts. Anybody wants to see them, come on down to the yard. The bank took the car because she couldn't pay her debts. Stop harassing Graham and his family.*

The group chat went dead.

No one replied. No one defended Carol. The silence was absolute, the kind of silence that falls over a courtroom when the murder weapon is laid on the evidence table with the defendant’s fingerprints glowing on the handle.

A few moments later, the notification appeared:

*Carol Holloway has left the group.*

Then:

*Evelyn Holloway has left the group.*

I looked at Rachel. Her hand found mine between the sofa cushions, our fingers interlocking.

The battle had been fought, the lines had been drawn, and the poisonous branch of the Holloway tree had finally been lopped off by its own rot. But there was still one piece of unfinished business—the most painful piece of all.

My mother.
