Chapter 5 - The Blue Velvet Box

Twenty-four hours later, the morphine drip had been replaced by oral pain management, and the door to my private recovery room opened.

Two uniformed officers from the San Diego Police Department walked in, accompanied by a detective in a sharp gray suit. Behind them walked Detective Sarah Ramos, a veteran investigator with cold, observant eyes and a notebook tucked beneath her arm.

"Mrs. Caldwell?" Detective Ramos asked, standing at the foot of the bed. "I’m sorry to intrude during your recovery, but we need your statement regarding the incident on Saturday afternoon."

Ethan stood up from his chair, his arms crossed over his chest, his posture rigid. "My wife is still in severe pain, Detective. Keep this brief."

"Of course, Dr. Caldwell," Ramos said respectfully. She looked down at me, her expression softening slightly. "Mrs. Caldwell, can you tell us what happened between you, your mother, and your sister before you were burned?"

I looked at the window, where the afternoon sun was cutting through the blinds, and for the first time in my life, I felt no instinct to protect them. The invisible leash of guilt that Vivian had tied around my neck when I was six years old snapped completely.

"My sister, Kelsey Hartley, broke into our private safe in the master bedroom," I said, my voice steady, though low. "She stole an antique diamond necklace and ring set left to my daughter by my late father-in-law, Charles Caldwell. The appraised value is over two hundred and fifty thousand dollars."

Detective Ramos took notes, her pen scratching against paper. "And your mother?"

"My mother, Vivian Hartley, orchestrated it. She was standing in the bedroom directing Kelsey. When I reclaimed the box and tried to escape down to the patio where our guests were, they cornered me in the kitchen. My father stood by and did nothing. When I threatened to call the police, my mother picked up a pot of boiling milk from the stove and threw it directly at my stomach."

Ramos didn't flinch, but her jaw tightened. "She claims it was a domestic accident. She told the responding officers that you became hysterical, lunged forward, and caught the handle of the pot yourself."

"There is an angled splash pattern on the lower cabinets," Ethan interjected coldly. "I’ve seen enough burn victims to know trajectories. The liquid struck her horizontally from four feet away. It was an assault with a deadly weapon."

Ramos nodded slowly. "We recovered the velvet box from your kitchen floor, Mrs. Caldwell. We also recovered your purse from Kelsey Hartley’s car. Inside the purse was your personal jewelry and six hundred dollars in cash from the baby shower envelopes."

I closed my eyes. The sheer, shameless vulgarity of it didn't even surprise me anymore.

"What happens now?" I asked.

"Vivian Hartley is currently being held at the Las Colinas Detention Facility on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault causing great bodily injury, and felony child endangerment," Ramos said clearly. "Kelsey Hartley has been booked for grand theft and conspiracy. Your father has not been charged yet, but he is being questioned as an accessory after the fact."

Ramos closed her notebook. "We need to know if you intend to cooperate with the District Attorney’s office, Mrs. Caldwell. Often, in family cases, victims recant."

I looked down at the bandage covering my ruined abdomen, then at the photo of Lily taped to the bedside monitor.

"I will testify," I said. "And I want full restraining orders against all three of them. Permanent ones."
