Chapter 8 - The Final Sentence

By 1:30 p.m., the courtroom was quiet again.

There was no jury box filled with citizens, no dramatic opening statements, and no flashing camera crews. Just the stark, quiet machinery of justice wrapping up its business.

Gerald Hutchinson stood before Circuit Court Judge Thomas Sterling wearing an orange prison jumpsuit that now looked baggy and ill-fitting on his shrinking frame. His silver hair was unbrushed, his shoulders permanently hunched, and his eyes remained fixed firmly on the green linoleum floor.

“Mr. Hutchinson,” Judge Sterling said, his voice deep and measured. “You have entered a plea of guilty to felony aggravated assault of a minor and felony child endangerment. Before I impose sentence, do you have anything to say to the court?”

Gerald swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. He looked up slowly, his bleary, bloodshot eyes scanning the courtroom until they landed on me sitting alone in the second row.

For a fraction of a second, I thought I might see remorse. I thought he might finally acknowledge the shattered skull, the blood on the tile, the terror in his granddaughter’s voice, or the destruction of his own family.

Instead, his lower jaw tightened into a bitter, stubborn line.

“I raised three children,” Gerald muttered into the courtroom microphone, his voice raspy and cracked with suppressed resentment. “I built a life. I kept a clean home. And my family turned on me over a spilled cup of soda. I accept the court's sentence.”

Judge Sterling let out a slow, heavy sigh of profound disappointment.

“Mr. Hutchinson, you didn't keep a home; you ran a garrison of fear,” Judge Sterling stated coldly. “You confused brutality with discipline, and tyranny with fatherhood. And today, the bill has finally come due.”

The judge picked up his heavy black fountain pen.

“It is the judgment and sentence of this court that you be committed to the Wisconsin Department of Corrections for a total term of eight years, with zero eligibility for parole prior to the mandatory five-year minimum. Furthermore, a permanent, lifetime no-contact restraining order protecting Rebecca Mercer, James Mercer, and minor child Lily Mercer is entered into the official record effective immediately. Any breach will be prosecuted to the absolute limit of the law. May God have mercy on your soul. Court is adjourned.”

Bang.

The gavel came down for the final time.

Two bailiffs stepped forward, placed their hands firmly on Gerald’s shoulders, and turned him around. As they led him through the secure rear doorway toward the subterranean transport vans, he didn't look back.

The tyrant of Maple Street was gone.
