Chapter 8 - Rebuilding from the Ground Up

Within seventy-two hours of the gala, the corporate earthquake shook the foundations of Chicago’s real estate world.

Daniel Harrison found himself locked out of his own corporate headquarters, stripped of his executive privileges, facing a thorough forensic financial audit by federal investigators regarding corporate fund misappropriation and offshore asset concealment. Stripped of his wealth, his status, and his mistress—who vanished the moment his corporate credit cards were frozen—Daniel was reduced to exactly what he had started with twenty-two years ago: nothing.

The board of directors unanimously voted to officially rename the firm Carter-Harrison Custom Homes, restoring Elizabeth’s name to its rightful place at the pinnacle of the company.

On a crisp Saturday morning three weeks later, sunlight poured through the large bay windows of Elizabeth and Ellie’s newly renovated home in the northern suburbs.

The air smelled of fresh cinnamon rolls baking in the oven—a recipe handed down directly from Margaret.

Elizabeth stood at the kitchen island, carefully fastening the silver clasp of her mother’s pearl necklace around Ellie’s neck. The tiny gray blemish near the clasp caught the morning light, glowing with quiet, enduring perfection.

Ellie looked down at the pearls, running her fingers gently over them before looking up at her mother with a bright, joyful smile.

“Do you think Grandma can see us?” Ellie asked softly.

May you like

Elizabeth wrapped her arms around her daughter, resting her chin on Ellie’s shoulder as they looked out toward the sunlit garden outside.

“Oh, honey,” Elizabeth whispered, a tear of pure peace slipping down her cheek. “I know she’s sitting right here with us, finishing every crossword puzzle we ever start.”
