Chapter 2 - The Five Wolves Awaken

At 2:45 a.m., in an unassuming brick warehouse on the edge of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, five men sat around a heavy steel conference table beneath industrial halogen fixtures.
Ten years ago, the Moretti name had commanded absolute fear along the docks, the trucking corridors, and the concrete plants of the five boroughs. The tabloids had called them the Five Wolves of Brooklyn—five orphaned brothers who had clawed their way out of Hell's Kitchen through sheer ruthlessness and absolute loyalty to one another.
Then had come the transformation.
Luca, the eldest at forty-four, had realized early that violence was an inefficient tool for permanence. Over a decade, he had systematically converted their empire into legitimate giants: Moretti Global Logistics, Titan Heavy Construction, Cerberus Cyber Defense, and Valenti Forensic Auditing. They had traded sawed-off shotguns for hostile takeovers, street enforcers for teams of Ivy League litigators, and back-alley bookies for controlling shares in municipal municipal bonds.
They were wealthier now than their father could have ever dreamed. They held seats on hospital boards, financed congressional campaigns, and dined with governors.
But the wolves had never had their teeth pulled. They had merely learned to wear three-piece suits from Savile Row.
Luca sat at the head of the table, his hand-rolled Tuscan cigar burning down to the ash. His face was carved from granite, cold gray eyes scanning five identical black leather folders.
To his right sat Matteo, forty-one, the operational architect of Titan Construction. Matteo was six-foot-four, with shoulders like a blacksmith and hands that could bend rebar. He wore a fitted black wool sweater, his silver-streaked hair cut short.
Next to him was Dante, thirty-eight, former intelligence contractor and now the chief executive of Cerberus Cyber Defense. Dante’s fingers moved across three mechanical keyboards simultaneously, his pale, sharp features illuminated by the blue wash of four portable tactical monitors.
Across the table sat Marco, thirty-five, the lead partner of Valenti Forensic Auditing. Marco was slender, immaculate in an olive-green Brunello Cucinelli suit, wearing gold-rimmed glasses that belied a mind capable of dismantling a multinational bank’s balance sheet in ninety minutes.
And at the foot of the table sat Leo, thirty-one, the youngest brother. Leo’s knuckles were scarred from his days in underground boxing circuits before he took over Moretti Maritime Security. Leo was leaning back in his chair, slowly peeling an apple with a carbon-steel folding knife, his eyes fixed on Luca.
"The audio file just decrypted," Dante said, his voice flat, devoid of inflection.
He hit a button on his terminal.
The speakers mounted to the warehouse ceiling crackled to life.
Crack.
The sound of the riding crop hitting skin bounced off the corrugated steel walls.
“Twenty-eight.”
Leo’s folding knife froze mid-slice.
“Look at her, Adrian. She still thinks she's your equal.”
Matteo’s massive fists closed on the steel table. The metal creaked under the hydraulic pressure of his grip.
Crack.
“Thirty!”
Then came Eleanor Vale’s cold command: “Lock the door. I will not have her blood staining the carpets when the caterers begin cleanup.”
The audio file clicked off.
For thirty seconds, nobody breathed. The only sound was the low, steady hum of Dante’s server fans and the distant horn of a tugboat cutting through the East River fog.
Leo slowly set his apple down on the table. He folded his knife with a soft, decisive click.
"I'll take twelve men," Leo whispered, his voice trembling with an unnatural, lethal vibration. "We breach the gates with two armored suburbans, hang Adrian Vale from the same beam by his throat, and leave the house burning."
"No," Luca said.
Leo’s head whipped around, his jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped. "Luca! You heard that! He hit our sister thirty times with a whip! He hung her like an animal! We promised Pop before he died that nothing would ever touch Anna!"
"And nothing will ever touch her again," Luca said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly soft cadence that immediately silenced the room. He looked at Leo, then at Matteo, Dante, and Marco. "If you kill Adrian Vale tonight, he suffers for ten minutes. The state puts him in a quiet cell, his lawyers file appeals, and his father pays off a judge for an early parole in five years. That is mercy. We do not give mercy to anyone who lays a hand on our blood."
Marco pushed his gold-rimmed glasses up the bridge of his nose. A chilling, razor-thin smile spread across his lips. "What are the orders, Luca?"
Luca stood up, towering over the table. He extinguished his cigar in a crystal tray, grinding the ember into dust.
"Anna said they think she has nobody," Luca said. "They believe the Vale name makes them untouchable. They believe money, pedigree, and blue-blood heritage make them kings."
He pointed a finger at Dante. "Dante. I want every server, every private phone, every tax filing, and every offshore account tied to Vale Enterprises cracked, duplicated, and downloaded before 4:00 a.m. I want the security footage from their ballroom downloaded and wiped from their local hard drives so they have no copy to destroy."
"Already eighty percent done," Dante murmured, his fingers flying across the keyboards. "The Vale estate uses a civilian cloud service based in New Jersey. It took me four minutes to bypass their firewall. I have four hundred gigabytes of raw 4K video from seven angles. I also have Adrian Vale’s private correspondence with the zoning commissioner."
Luca turned to Marco. "Marco. Audit their debt structure. Who holds their paper?"
Marco tapped a leather ledger. "The Vale real estate empire is leveraged to their teeth. They owe ninety-two million dollars across four commercial developments in Manhattan and Greenwich. Their primary creditor is Apex Sovereign Bank."
"Buy the notes," Luca said flatly.
Marco looked up, his eyebrows raising slightly. "All ninety-two million?"
"Buy the bank if you have to," Luca said without hesitation. "By 8:00 a.m., I want Moretti Holdings to be the sole debtor, the sole lender, and the sole landlord of every square foot the Vale family occupies."
"Done," Marco replied, already opening a secure terminal to Singapore and London financial markets.
Luca turned to Matteo. "Matteo. Mobilize forty of our senior security operators. Full black-tie attire. No street clothes. We arrive at the Vale estate at 7:00 a.m. sharp. I want four armored Maybachs and six black Escalades."
"And the local police?" Matteo asked.
"The Greenwich Chief of Police received a campaign contribution from our construction trust three months ago," Luca said calmly. "He will receive an urgent call at 6:30 advising him that a private family matter is being resolved and that any patrol units sent to the Vale property before 9:00 a.m. will disrupt a federal investigation."
Finally, Luca looked down at Leo.
"Leo."
The youngest brother leaned forward, his dark eyes burning with venomous anticipation. "Yes, boss?"
"You get to cut the ropes off her wrists," Luca said softly. "And when the time comes to break Adrian Vale’s hands... you do it yourself."
May you like
Leo nodded once. A slow, terrifying smile spread across his face.
"Move," Luca commanded.
