Chapter 6 - The Trial of Public Opinion

The trial lasted three weeks, but the verdict was decided the moment the federal prosecutors released the security footage from the basement bunker to the national news networks.

The image of Elena—broken, starved, and shivering in a concrete cell—flashed across every television screen in America. The high-society elites who had clapped politely at Victoria’s gala now spat her name out like poison. The Sterling Corporation’s stock plummeted by eighty-two percent within forty-eight hours of the indictment. Board members resigned en masse, distancing themselves from the toxic legacy of Victoria and her co-conspirators.

I sat in the federal courtroom every single day, flanked by Marcus and a team of top-tier litigators.

Elena didn’t attend the trial. She was recovering in a private recovery clinic on the coast of Maine, surrounded by ocean air, sunlight, and twenty-four-hour medical care. Day by day, under the watchful eye of Dr. Vance, the hollows in her cheeks began to fill out. The haunted, terrified look in her eyes slowly gave way to a quiet, steady light.

And Sophia? Sophia was laughing again. For the first time in her life, she had a backyard with green grass, a golden retriever puppy named Barnaby, and a father who didn't travel across oceans for boardrooms that didn't matter.

On the final day of the trial, the federal judge banged his gavel with finality.

“Victoria Sterling, having been found guilty on all counts of federal grand larceny, kidnapping, and systemic financial fraud, is hereby sentenced to twenty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.”

Victoria didn't scream. She didn't cry. As the bailiffs led her away in an orange jumpsuit, her hair unstyled and her face bare of makeup, she looked like an old, shriveled ghost of the woman who had once ruled Boston with an iron fist.

I watched her go, feeling nothing—no anger, no triumph, only a vast, empty peace.

The crown had fallen. The kingdom was ash. But out of the ruins, something real had finally begun to grow.
