Chapter 9 - Justice in the Valley

Vincent stood up slowly, leaving Sofia in Grace’s gentle care as he turned his attention toward the center of the ballroom where Charles and Isabella sat trembling.
He walked toward them with a slow, terrifying calmness. The frantic rage of the night before had crystallized into absolute, cold-blooded finality.
“Vince—please,” Isabella choked out, tears streaming down her face as she looked up at him. “My uncle... he forced me into it! They threatened my family! I was just a pawn in their game!”
Vincent stopped two feet away from her. He looked down at the silver leaf pendant still resting against her chest—the pendant he had bought in Geneva twelve years ago.
With a sudden, sharp jerk, Vincent reached out and ripped the chain straight off her neck, snapping the silver links in his bare hand.
“You weren't a pawn, Isabella,” Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. “You were a willing participant. You wore another woman's life like a stolen coat, and you thought you could sit at my table and inherit an empire built on deception.”
He tossed the broken necklace onto the marble floor at her feet.
“Dominic,” Vincent called out without turning around.
“Yeah, cousin?”
“Take Charles and Isabella down to the lower shipping warehouses in Yonkers. Hand them over to the federal marshals on our payroll with the complete financial ledgers attached. Ensure they are prosecuted to the absolute maximum extent of federal law, with no plea deals, no bail, and no comfort.”
Charles slumped forward in his chair, letting out a defeated sob, while Isabella screamed hysterically as Dominic’s enforcers hauled them both roughly to their feet and dragged them toward the service exit.
The heavy doors slammed shut behind them, sealing their fate forever.
The ballroom fell into a profound, cleansing silence.
Vincent turned around, walking slowly back across the marble floor toward Sofia. The white roses that had choked the room were still banked high along the walls, but as Vincent walked past them, he reached out, systematically swiping his arm across the floral displays, sending the white blossoms crashing down onto the floor one by one, scattering their petals across the marble.
Sofia watched him, a quiet, understanding smile touching her lips.
When he reached her, Vincent didn't say a word. He simply pulled her back into his arms, burying his face in her hair, breathing in the scent of home that he had despaired of ever smelling again.

“You're never leaving my sight again,” Vincent vowed fiercely against her neck.
“I wouldn't dream of it,” Sofia whispered, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady, powerful beat of a heart that had finally stopped grieving.
