Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Our Own Making

Five years later.

The autumn sun rose over Columbus in a brilliant display of crimson, gold, and amber light, painting the suburban skyline with the quiet beauty of a new beginning.

I stood on the wide, sunlit front porch of our home, holding a cup of steaming black coffee, looking out over the emerald-green lawn and the vibrant Wall of Triumph visible through the large front windows.

The house was quiet—not with the suffocating silence of fear or control, but with the peaceful, breathing quiet of a home filled with love, ambition, and absolute freedom.

Upstairs, Sophie was packing her bags for her freshman year at a prestigious East Coast art university, where she had received a full merit scholarship. Downstairs, Lily was preparing for her high school senior year, full of dreams, fierce intellect, and an unstoppable spirit that no one could ever diminish.

Mark stepped out onto the porch behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin gently on my shoulder. He took a sip from my coffee mug, grinning.

“You’re up early,” Mark murmured, kissing the side of my neck.

“I like the mornings,” I whispered, leaning back into his embrace. “They feel like a blank canvas.”

Mark looked out toward the horizon where the sun was climbing higher into the clear blue sky, casting a warm, golden glow across our lives.

“We built something good, didn't we?” he asked softly.

“We did,” I smiled, taking his hand and interlacing my fingers tightly with his.

Everyone had once thought Evelyn was simply teaching our daughters how to accept failure—mistaking emotional cruelty for character building, and toxic control for parental wisdom. But in the end, her attempts to break our children had only revealed the unbreakable steel at their core.

They hadn't been taught how to fail.

May you like

They had been given the opportunity to learn how to fly, entirely on their own terms, across a sky of their own making.

And as long as I had breath in my lungs, no shadow would ever touch their wings again.
