Chapter 7 - Turning the Tables

Three days later, Arthur Vance’s conference room looked like the war room of a multinational takeover.

Piles of red-labeled folders covered the walnut table. Marcus, Arthur’s senior forensic accountant, sat beside a laptop hooked up to a 75-inch monitor displaying a web of financial flowcharts.

"Here’s the full forensic audit, Clara," Marcus said, clicking his mouse to highlight a series of red nodes on the screen. "Daniel Miller is an amateur who thought he was a mastermind."

Arthur chuckled into his cigar smoke. "Amateurs always leave a paper trail because their egos won't let them believe anyone is smart enough to find it. Show her the big one, Marcus."

Marcus pulled up a document bearing the corporate letterhead of *Apex Engineering Partners*, Daniel’s employer.

"Daniel was an associate engineer earning $115,000," Marcus explained. "What he didn't tell you is that six months ago, he was awarded a proprietary patent on an infrastructure drainage system. Apex bought the patent outright for $1.2 million."

Clara felt the room spin slightly. "One point two million dollars?"

"Paid in three installments," Marcus confirmed. "The first installment of $400,000 cleared in August. Daniel had the funds routed through a shell LLC registered in Delaware under the name *TM Strategic Consulting*—Teresa Miller’s initials. He was actively hiding an eight-figure asset pool from the marital estate while forcing you to live on pennies and demanding your paycheck to cover his mother's living expenses."

Arthur leaned forward, his eyes burning with righteous fury.

"In Illinois, intentional concealment of marital assets during the pendency of a marriage, combined with the fraudulent acquisition of credit using a spouse’s identity, triggers what we call the 'Fraud on Marital Rights' doctrine. It doesn't just entitle you to fifty percent of what he earned, Clara. It entitles you to *punitive damages, full restitution of every dime you transferred, and a claim against the hidden funds.*"

"What about his job?" Clara asked.

Arthur smiled coldly. "Apex Engineering holds sixty million dollars in municipal contracts with the City of Chicago. Their ethics charter strictly forbids any partner or senior associate from engaging in fraudulent financial practices or felony-level identity theft. Marcus sent a formal discovery subpoena to Apex’s general counsel two hours ago."

Right on cue, Clara’s personal phone buzzed on the table.

It was Daniel.

Clara looked up at Arthur. Arthur nodded, reaching over to tap the speakerphone button.

"Put it on speaker, Clara. Let’s hear what our little engineer has to say."

Clara pressed the button. "Yes, Daniel?"

On the other end, Daniel’s voice sounded ragged, frantic, breathing like a hunted animal.

"Clara! Clara, please, pick up! I’ve been trying to reach you for forty-eight hours! You have to call off this lawyer! You have to stop this!"

"Stop what, Daniel?" Clara asked coolly.

"Apex just suspended me!" Daniel wailed, his voice cracking into high-pitched panic. "They locked me out of the building! The managing partners called me into HR and showed me the subpoena! They’re launching an internal ethics review! If this goes to a formal hearing, they’re going to revoke my engineering license! Clara, please! We can work this out! I’ll give you the divorce! I’ll give you seventy thousand dollars cash right now!"

Arthur Vance leaned over the microphone, his gravelly voice dropping like a heavy iron weight.

"Mr. Miller, this is Arthur Vance. In five minutes, my courier is delivering a criminal referral package to the Special Prosecutions Bureau of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Your seventy-thousand-dollar offer wouldn't even cover my retainer for the week."

Silence fell on the line. Daniel’s breath caught in his throat.

"Vance? You... you can't do this. I'm a professional! My mother is seventy years old! You're going to destroy her!"

"Your mother should have thought about that before she spent Clara’s bonus money on gold chains and mocked her in front of twelve people," Arthur said mercilessly. "We’ll see you in Room 1804 of the Daley Center on Thursday morning at 9:00 AM. Bring a toothbrush, Daniel. You might need it."

Arthur clicked the red button, cutting the call off mid-sentence.

Clara looked down at her hands. For the first time in seven months, her shoulders felt light. The invisible boulder that had crushed her chest since the day she met Teresa Miller had finally rolled away.
