Chapter 5 - The Siege“Get down!” Roman barked, his voice abandoning all conversational pretense, turning into the sharp, barked commands of a combat veteran.

Before I could even process the warning, the massive glass windows overlooking the ocean shattered inward in a deafening explosion of flying shards and splintered aluminum frames. A hail of silenced submachine gun fire chewed through the kitchen island, sending marble chips and crystal glass exploding across the room.

I shrieked, dropping flat onto the polished concrete floor, curling my hands over my head as bullets ricocheted off the stainless steel appliances.

Titan didn't panic. The 130-pound Corso sprang up instantly, his deep, thunderous bark shaking the walls as he positioned himself directly over my body, acting as a living shield against the incoming crossfire.

“Hold the stairs!” Roman shouted toward the dark hallway, firing three rapid, precise shots through the broken window frame into the stormy night.

Footsteps pounded across the hardwood upstairs. Two of Roman’s guards materialized from the shadows, weapons drawn, returning suppressive fire toward the rocky coastline below where shadowy figures were scaling the glass terrace.

“Sir, they’re coming in through the lower deck!” one of the guards yelled over the deafening roar of gunfire. “We’re compromised!”

“Fallback to the secure bunker beneath the study!” Roman ordered, sliding across the slick floor toward me. He grabbed my arm with an iron grip, hauling me to my feet. “Emily, move!”

“Titan!” I yelled, refusing to leave the dog behind.

Titan was already trotting backward, growling furiously at the blown-out window, snapping his jaws at the empty air before turning to follow our retreat.

We sprinted down a narrow, wood-paneled hallway away from the kitchen as a secondary volley of gunfire shattered the overhead light fixtures, plunging the corridor into flashing strobe-like darkness illuminated only by muzzle flashes.

Roman pushed open a heavy oak bookcase in his private study, revealing a concealed steel vault door fitted with an advanced hydraulic locking mechanism. He punched a code into the keypad with one hand while keeping his weapon trained on the hallway with the other.

“Inside. Now.”

I scrambled through the opening, pulling Titan in right behind me just as a grenade detonated somewhere in the foyer, shaking the entire foundation of the house with a bone-rattling shockwave.

Roman dived through the doorway last, slamming a heavy manual override lever. The steel vault door sealed shut with a deafening, hydraulic hiss just as a hail of bullets pinged harmlessly against its exterior plating.

Pitch blackness enveloped us for a fraction of a second before emergency red LED strips flickered to life along the floorboards, casting an eerie, crimson glow over the bunker’s interior.

It was a compact, high-tech command center fitted with computer monitors, satellite communication arrays, and racks of tactical gear.

I leaned against a steel workbench, gasping for breath, my hands shaking uncontrollably. “They... they tracked us here in less than an hour. How is that possible?”

Roman was already kneeling before a master control console, his fingers flying across a mechanical keyboard with dizzying speed. He didn't look up.

“Because the flash drive isn't just a data storage unit,” Roman said grimly, the realization dawning on his face with chilling clarity. “It has an active military-grade tracking beacon built directly into the titanium housing.”

I stared at him in horror. “You brought a homing beacon straight into my pet store?”

“I didn't know,” Roman snapped back, his jaw tight. “The syndicate must have upgraded the encryption protocol before the drop. They didn't just want the data back—they used the drive to lead an entire hit squad straight to my doorstep.”

“And now we’re trapped in a metal box at the bottom of a burning house,” I whispered, looking around the small bunker.

“We aren't trapped,” Roman said, standing up slowly. He reached into a wall locker and pulled out a heavy tactical vest, tossing it toward me. “We’re reloading.”
