Chapter 9 - The Family Portrait

On a bright Saturday afternoon in late May, the front lawn of the Greenwich estate played host to an event that local society columnists would spend weeks trying to decipher.

There were no guards standing with hidden weapons by the hedges. There were no hushed whispers or nervous politicians.

Instead, a massive white tent had been erected on the grass, filled with laughing children, medical staff from Mount Sinai, neighborhood families, and four very proud, well-behaved Vale boys wearing matching blue blazers.

In the center of the lawn, a professional photographer was trying to organize a large family portrait.

“All right, everyone together!” the photographer called out, waving his hands. “Closer together, please!”

Evan, Caleb, Noah, and Luke crowded around the wooden bench, grinning from ear to ear.

Adrian stood behind the bench, his hands resting securely on Nia’s shoulders as she sat smiling brightly for the camera. Chloe stood right beside them, looking healthy, vibrant, and full of life, holding a glass of sparkling cider.

“Smile!” the photographer shouted.
