Chapter 4 - The Federal Wrath

On the other end of the line, located in a quiet, book-lined study in Washington, D.C., Chief Justice Adrian Caldwell froze. The pen dropped from his hand, scattering black ink across a stack of federal appellate briefs. The grandfatherly warmth in his voice vanished in a microsecond, replaced instantly by the cold, implacable fury of a federal judge whose entire world had just been threatened.
“Elena?” Adrian’s voice dropped an octave, turning into a terrifying military-grade command. “Where are you? What do you mean they’re hurting you?”
“Connecticut,” Elena gasped, her vision blurring as darkness crept in around the edges of her sight. “The Mercer estate... Daniel... they wouldn't let me get help. I’m bleeding, Daddy. Please…”
“Stay on the line, my sweet girl,” Adrian commanded, his voice shaking with a rage that could move mountains. “Do not close your eyes. I am calling every federal resource in your county right now. No one lays a hand on my daughter. Listen to me: they are already dead men.”
The line didn't disconnect, but Adrian was already slamming down his desk phone to pick up his encrypted satellite secure-line.
Back in the dining room, the silence was absolute. You could hear the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the foyer and the heavy, ragged breathing of Elena as she curled onto the cold marble floor.
Daniel lunged forward, dropping to his knees beside her, his face a mask of panic. “Elena! Elena, please—give me the phone! Tell him it was a misunderstanding! Tell him we were just joking—!”
Elena pulled away from his grasping hands, her eyes burning with pure venom. “Don't touch me, Daniel. If my baby dies, I swear to you on my mother’s grave, my father will bury you beneath a federal penitentiary and throw away the key.”
“You can’t do that!” Brenda screamed, losing all her upper-class composure as she rushed over, her face twisted in hysteria. “Daniel is a respected businessman! We contribute to campaigns! You’re a hysterical pregnant girl making things up!”
Before Daniel could reply, a deafening sound echoed from outside the massive estate windows.
Thump-thump-thump-thump.
The heavy rotor wash of a twin-engine Sikorsky black helicopter whipped the manicured lawns into a frenzy, casting blinding searchlights across the glass façade of the Mercer mansion. A second later, the heavy iron security gates at the end of the driveway were blown violently off their hinges with a metallic crash.
Tires squealed on the gravel as three black federal SUVs—bearing the unmarked plates of the United States Marshals Service—stormed up the circular drive, doors flying open before the vehicles had even come to a complete stop.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
Heavy, tactical-booted footsteps pounded against the front porch. The solid oak front doors didn't even have time to be unlocked; a federal tactical officer kicked them off their hinges with a single, brutal blow.
“United States Marshals! Nobody move!”
Six heavily armed tactical agents flooded into the lavish dining room, rifles raised, scanning the room with cold, precision focus. Behind them stepped a local police chief, sweating profusely, holding his hat in his hands as if standing before an executioner.
Daniel stood up slowly, holding his hands out defensively. “Gentlemen, there’s been a mistake! I am Daniel Mercer, I pay taxes—this is a domestic dispute—”
The lead marshal didn't even look at Daniel. His eyes locked entirely on the bleeding woman curled on the floor.
“Clear the room!” the marshal barked into his shoulder mic. “Get the federal medical team in here immediately! Move, move, move!”
Two elite combat medics rushed past the paralyzed guests carrying a trauma stretcher. They gently scooped Elena up, securing her IV lines and oxygen masks with practiced speed.

As they lifted her toward the shattered front entrance, Elena caught one last glimpse of her husband.
Daniel was standing paralyzed in the center of the ruined dining room, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, while his mother wept uncontrollably into her silk handkerchief.
