Chapter 4 - THE WEB UNRAVELS

By 3:00 AM, the hospital suite looked less like a recovery room and more like a high-level corporate war room.

Emma was sleeping soundly, the IV drip clearing the sedatives from her bloodstream, her color slowly returning to a healthy, natural tone. The bruising on her legs was being treated with specialized vascular compression therapies, and Dr. Sterling confirmed that with aggressive intervention, permanent damage would be avoided.

Lucas sat in a leather armchair beside the bed, his shirtsleeves rolled up, his laptop open on his knees.

Standing near the window were two men: Marcus Vance, a senior partner from a top-tier criminal defense and corporate litigation firm in Chicago, and Detective Miller of the Chicago Police Department’s Special Investigations Division.

“We’ve secured the security logs from your penthouse and the medical agency,” Marcus said, scrolling through a tablet. “The agency that sent Nurse Miller was a shell corporation registered in Delaware. The ultimate parent company is a subsidiary of Bennett Holdings—controlled directly by your mother’s private discretionary fund.”

Detective Miller flipped open a leather notebook. “We also picked up Dr. Miller—or rather, Sarah Miller, a registered nurse whose license was suspended two years ago for prescription fraud. We tracked her credit card using an anonymous tip provided by your office about an hour ago. She’s currently sitting in a holding cell at the 18th District.”

Lucas didn't look up from his laptop screen. “Did she talk?”

“Like a broken faucet,” Detective Miller said with a grim smile. “She admitted she was hired directly by Richard Bennett. Her instructions were simple: keep Mrs. Bennett heavily sedated, restrict her mobility, create a paper trail of psychological instability, and ensure she never left the apartment unaccompanied. If Emma resisted, she was to be physically restrained—hence the bruises on her legs.”

The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Marcus adjusted his glasses. “Lucas, what you have here is a textbook case of targeted conspiracy, wire fraud, forgery, kidnapping, and administration of illicit substances. We can have arrest warrants issued for Richard Bennett and your mother by sunrise.”

Lucas closed his laptop with a sharp clack.

He stood up, walking over to the window to look out at the dark silhouette of the Chicago skyline against the breaking dawn.

“No,” Lucas said quietly. “Not yet.”

Marcus frowned. “Lucas, legally—”

“I don’t want them arrested quietly in the middle of the night so they can post bond by noon and hide behind high-priced defense attorneys,” Lucas interrupted, turning around to face his legal team. “I want them completely exposed. I want every single board member, every major investor, and every high-society crony my mother and Richard answer to, to see the exact kind of monsters they’ve been dining with.”

He walked back to the bed, looking down at Emma. She stirred slightly, her hand reaching out blindly across the white sheets. Lucas immediately caught her fingers, pressing them against his warm palm.

“Tomorrow morning,” Lucas continued, his voice cold and steady as granite, “Bennett Holdings holds its quarterly shareholder summit at the Drake Hotel. Every major media outlet in the Midwest will be in attendance.”

He looked up at Marcus.

“I want you to prepare a comprehensive dossier containing every financial audit of Richard’s fraudulent transactions, the forged guardianship papers, the shell company documents linking my mother to Nurse Miller, and the medical tox screen from this hospital.”

May you like

Marcus’s eyes widened slightly, a slow, appreciative smile spreading across his face. “You’re going to air the family laundry on live television during the annual summit?”

“I’m going to clean house,” Lucas corrected. “Permanently.”
