Chapter 9 - THE PROPOSAL ON BRATTLE STREET

It was a quiet Sunday morning in June.

The bookstore was closed for the day, but Emily had gone inside early to organize a new shipment of children’s chapter books before the afternoon rush.

She was kneeling by the bottom shelf near the back corner, arranging stacks of illustrated fairy tales, when she heard the front door click open.

“We’re closed today,” Emily called out without turning around, assuming it was her sister Chloe.

“I know,” a familiar, deep voice replied.

Emily froze. She stood up, brushing off her jeans, and turned around.

Graham was standing in the middle of the empty bookstore. But he wasn’t holding books or tools.

In his arms stood Lily, Leo, and Maya.

And each of the three toddlers was wearing a tiny handmade paper crown made out of bright yellow construction paper.

Lily stepped forward, holding out a small, beautifully wrapped velvet box in her chubby hands with a gap-toothed grin.

“For Mama,” Lily announced proudly.

Emily’s hand flew to her mouth, a sharp, choked gasp escaping her lips. Her eyes welled with sudden, overwhelming tears as she looked from the three children over to Graham.

Graham stepped closer, gently setting Lily down on the rug, and dropped down onto one knee right there between the bookshelves filled with stories of happy endings.

“Eighteen months ago,” Graham began, his voice thick with emotion, his hands trembling slightly as he reached out to take the velvet box from Lily, “I was a coward. I looked at the greatest blessing of my life and tried to run away from it because I thought perfection was better than reality.”

He opened the box, revealing a simple, elegant platinum ring set with a small, clear diamond flanked by three tiny blue-gray sapphires—representing the three anchors that had brought him back to earth.

“You built this store, you built a family out of the ruins I left behind, and you taught me what it actually means to be a man,” Graham whispered, looking up at her with eyes full of a love so fierce and absolute it took her breath away. “Emily Hart... I don't deserve a second chance. But if you’ll give it to me, I promise to spend every single day of the rest of my life proving that I am worthy of the family we made together.”

The bookstore was completely silent, save for the soft hum of the air conditioner overhead.

Emily didn't hesitate.

She dropped to her knees in the middle of the floor, right in front of him, pulling him forward by his collar and crashing her lips against his in a fierce, desperate, beautiful kiss.

From the side, Leo clapped his hands together and cheered, while Lily and Maya giggled, throwing handfuls of yellow paper confetti over their heads.
