Chapter 6 - The Invitation to the Gala

Two weeks later, the social calendar of Columbus’s elite was dominated by a single, inescapable event: the annual Founders’ Charity Ball held at the grand historic ballroom of the Franklin Hotel downtown.

It was the ultimate gathering of old money, corporate titans, and political heavyweights—the very same circle where Trevor Evans and Chloe Whitmore had once expected to reign supreme.

When the black Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up to the red-carpeted entrance, the flashbulbs of the paparazzi went off like a localized lightning storm.

The rear door opened smoothly.

Julian stepped out first, adjusting the cuffs of his custom charcoal tuxedo, his tall, commanding presence instantly drawing the collective breath of the photographers and reporters crowded behind the velvet ropes.

Then he turned, offering his hand.

When Sadie stepped out into the light, the camera shutters accelerated into a furious, unbroken roar.

She wore a backless, midnight-blue silk velvet gown that swept gracefully down to the floor, shimmering with subtle silver embroidery that caught the crystal light of the grand foyer. Around her neck rested a simple, breathtaking diamond tennis necklace—a quiet wedding gift from Julian that cost more than most suburban homes. Her hair was styled in a sleek, polished bob that framed her jawline with sharp, untouchable elegance.

There was no trace of the terrified woman who had once scrubbed diner floors or hid in gym parking lots. She walked with the absolute, unshakeable grace of a queen who knew every eye in the room was fixed on her.

As they walked up the grand marble steps, society columnists and high-ranking executives parted like the Red Sea, murmuring in hushed, awestruck tones.

“Is that... isn't that Julian Vance’s wife? I heard she came from nowhere...” “Look at the necklace... rumor has it he bought out a private collection in Geneva just for her debut...” “And the Whitmores? Have you seen Chloe tonight? Her family wouldn't even let her enter through the main doors after the scandal...”

Julian led Sadie seamlessly through the sea of glittering socialites toward the grand ballroom, his hand resting securely and possessively at the small of her back. Every step they took was a silent declaration: She belongs to me. And anyone who touches her answers to the dark.
