Chapter 4 - The Surveillance Ghost

The freezing wind howled across the stone courtyard of the Vale estate, carrying wet snowflakes that melted instantly against the black-and-white cruisers parked by the service entrance.
Mara stood beside a burly police officer, her wrists unhandcuffed—courtesy of Julian’s strict instructions—while two detectives waited by the squad car door.
Julian stood under the overhang of the marble portico, his charcoal overcoat pulled tight against the chill. He wasn't looking at the police officers. He was looking at Celeste, who had wrapped herself in a white mink stole and rushed down to the courtyard to ensure her victory was witnessed.
“Oh, Julian, thank goodness,” Celeste breathed, linking her arm through his. “The police are here. It’s so tragic, really. I always try to give people second chances, but theft in your own home... it’s unforgivable.”
Julian didn't pull his arm away, but his muscles remained rigid as iron. “Go back inside, Celeste. It’s freezing out here.”
“I just want to make sure justice is served,” she purred, flashing a triumphant glance toward Mara.
Julian looked past Celeste at the lead detective, a tired-looking man with a clipboard. “Detective Miller, hold off on the transport for ten minutes.”
Miller frowned. “Mr. Vale, you called us for a burglary in progress. We have the suspect, we have the recovered stolen property, and we have a signed witness statement from your fiancée. We can't just leave her standing in the snow.”
“You aren't leaving her,” Julian said smoothly. “You’re coming inside my study to review a piece of digital evidence that hasn't been processed yet.”
Celeste’s smile faltered. “Evidence? Julian, what are you talking about? Vance already checked the east wing feed; it was down—”
“Not the east wing feed, Celeste,” Julian interrupted, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on the back of everyone’s arms stand up. “The perimeter macro-cameras. The ones that record the entire exterior facade of the mansion twenty-four hours a day, regardless of indoor maintenance.”
For the first time since the night began, true, unadulterated panic flashed across Celeste’s face. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.
Ten minutes later, the private study was packed.
Detective Miller sat behind Julian’s mahogany desk. Vance stood by the door. Celeste perched nervously on the edge of a leather sofa, wringing her hands inside her white mink stole. Mara stood near the bookshelf, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm.
And Julian stood before the massive wall-mounted 85-inch television screen, holding a wireless tablet.
“Let’s look at what happened between 3:15 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. today,” Julian said calmly. He tapped the screen.
The display flickered to life, showing a crystal-clear, wide-angle exterior shot of the mansion’s east wing garden. Heavy falling snow drifted past the lens.
“As my head of security noted, the indoor hallway cameras were temporarily disabled for a server reboot,” Julian narrated, his eyes fixed on the screen. “However, the exterior thermal and optical tracking cameras operate on an entirely independent, encrypted satellite grid.”
On the screen, a figure in a heavy black winter coat and a wool beanie emerged from a side service door. The figure carried something small and glittering in a gloved hand.
Celeste stood up abruptly from the sofa, her voice shrill. “This is ridiculous! You’re wasting the police’s time with weather footage!”
“Watch the screen, Celeste,” Julian commanded quietly.
On the display, the hooded figure walked briskly across the snow-covered garden path, approached a hollow decorative stone near the eastern greenhouse, dropped a small object into the recess, and then hurried back toward the service entrance.
Julian tapped the screen again, zooming in on the face of the figure as they paused briefly beneath an outdoor security lamp.
The hood slipped back for a fraction of a second.
The face illuminated by the amber light wasn't Mara Ellison.
It was Marta Gomez—one of Celeste’s personal private stylists, hired exclusively for the engagement weekend.
The entire room went dead silent. Detective Miller slowly turned his head to look at Celeste, his pen hovering motionlessly over his notepad.
Celeste stumbled backward, her legs hitting the edge of the coffee table. “No... that’s... that’s AI! That’s a deepfake! Julian, you can’t possibly believe a computer glitch over my word—”
“Vance,” Julian said without turning around.
“Already detained her, sir,” Vance replied smoothly from the doorway, stepping aside to reveal Marta Gomez being pushed into the study by two security guards, looking terrified and sobbing hysterically.
“Mr. Vale, I’m sorry!” Marta shrieked, collapsing onto her knees on the Persian rug. “Miss Ashford paid me five thousand dollars! She told me to plant the locket in the east wing and tell security I saw the maid lurking near the safe! She said nothing bad would happen to me!”
Celeste stood frozen in the center of the room. The mask of polished aristocracy had completely shattered, revealing the desperate, cornered grifter underneath.
Detective Miller snapped his notebook shut, stood up, and clicked his handcuffs.
“Celeste Ashford,” Miller said crisply, stepping toward her. “You’re under arrest for filing a false police report, conspiracy to commit perjury, and planting stolen property.”
As the heavy steel cuffs clicked around Celeste’s wrists, she didn't scream or cry. She simply turned her head, fixing Mara with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

“You ruined everything,” Celeste hissed as the officers hauled her toward the door. “You absolute parasite... you ruined everything!”
The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, leaving the study in a profound, suffocating silence.
