Chapter 6 - The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The NICU at Wakefield Regional Medical Center smelled of warm flannel, sterile wipes, and the faint, rhythmic beep of oxygen monitors.

Daniel scrubbed his hands up to his elbows with antibacterial soap, watching the white foam lather against his skin. He rinsed under the warm water, dried his hands with a paper towel, and pushed through the swinging double doors into Pod B.

Nurse Jackie, a veteran pediatric nurse with kind eyes and silver-streaked hair, was standing beside Incubator 3.

“Well, Mr. Mercer,” Jackie said softly, smiling as she looked up. “You’re just in time. The doctor cleared them for skin-to-skin contact this morning.”

Daniel felt a sudden, sharp constriction in his chest. He stopped two feet away from the plastic enclosure where two tiny bundles—wrapped in blue and pink striped blankets—were resting side by side.

“Can I... can I hold them both?” Daniel asked, his voice trembling.

“One at a time,” Jackie said gently, unlocking the side panel of the incubator. “Let’s start with big brother.”

She reached in with expert, tender care and lifted a tiny, three-pound baby boy into Daniel’s arms.

Daniel’s knees felt weak. He lowered himself onto the small rocking chair beside the unit, pulling the baby against his chest. The infant was impossibly light, no heavier than a hardbound book, with a fuzz of dark hair and tiny fingernails the size of pinheads. A thin nasal cannula delivered oxygen to his button nose, and tiny monitor leads were taped to his chest.

For a long moment, Daniel just sat there, listening to the rhythmic, fragile rise and fall of the baby’s chest.

Then, the infant’s eyes fluttered open.

They weren't Daniel’s eyes. They were Claire’s eyes—warm, hazel, and impossibly deep.

A single tear spilled over Daniel’s eyelashes, dropping down to land softly on the blue blanket. He pressed his face against the baby’s soft head, inhaling the sweet, clean scent of newborn skin.

“I’m sorry,” Daniel whispered into the quiet hum of the NICU. “I’m so sorry I wasn't strong enough. But I’m here now. I’m right here.”

The baby let out a tiny, contented sigh, shifting his small hand until one microscopic finger curled around Daniel’s thumb with a grip of absolute, unbreakable trust.

Across the room, the window looked out over the Raleigh skyline where the morning sun was finally burning through the last remnants of the storm clouds, painting the glass in brilliant shades of gold and amber.

The bridge had nearly collapsed. The foundations had been poisoned by rot and deceit.

But as Daniel sat rocking his son in the quiet light of the hospital ward, holding the fragile margin of a future he had almost destroyed, he knew what he had to do.

He would pour the new concrete.

And he would never, ever let go.
