Chapter 6 - The Wall of Silence Breaks

By dawn on Saturday, the iron gates of the Sterling estate were besieged by news vans, telephoto lenses, and satellite dishes.

The story had broken on social media before the morning papers could even print their headlines. A guest who had slipped away from the party had sold a 15-second clip to a tabloid news network—a clip showing Victoria tipping the water pitcher over Lily’s bound wrists.

The headline was plastered across every digital portal in the nation:

BILLIONAIRE’S WIFE ARRESTED: HORROR AT GREENWICH MANSION.

Inside his study on the ground floor, Daniel sat behind a vast mahogany desk. He had not slept in twenty-four hours. His suit jacket was gone, his sleeves rolled up, and dark shadows bruised the skin beneath his eyes.

Across from him sat Arthur Vance, his senior corporate counsel and longtime personal friend, along with Marcus.

"The board convened an emergency session at 5:00 AM," Arthur said, adjusting his tortoiseshell glasses and sliding a summary document across the desk. "The institutional investors are panicking. The stock opened down six percent in pre-market trading in Frankfurt. They want a statement, Daniel. They want you to say this was an isolated domestic incident and that you're taking a temporary leave of absence to resolve personal matters."

Daniel looked down at the paper. His gaze was cold, sharp, and terrifyingly clear.

"A leave of absence?"

"To calm the market," Arthur explained gently. "They’re worried about reputational contagion. If Victoria’s defense team tries to drag you into this—claiming you were negligent, that you knew—"

"I don't give a damn about the stock, Arthur," Daniel said quietly.

Arthur blinked. "Daniel, you hold forty percent of the voting shares. If you step back—"

"I am not stepping back," Daniel cut him off, his voice ringing like tempered steel. "And I am not issuing a sanitized corporate apology."

He leaned forward, placing both hands flat on the mahogany.

"Draft a press release. Release it in thirty minutes. State the exact facts: Victoria Vance has been removed from this estate, arrested by the Connecticut State Police on multiple felony charges, and divorce proceedings have been initiated immediately under fault provisions."

Arthur swallowed hard. "And the board?"

"Tell the board that if a single director attempts to move for my removal while my daughter is recovering from assault, I will execute my contractual right to liquidate my entire personal stake on the open market at noon on Monday. Let them see what happens to the stock price when forty percent of the float hits the exchange without a buyer."

Arthur stared at him for a long, silent moment. Then, a slow, grim smile touched the lawyer's lips.

"They'll fall in line within ten seconds."

"Make it five," Daniel said. He turned his attention to Marcus. "What about the guests from the lawn?"

Marcus pulled out his tablet. "We identified all forty-eight adults present. Twelve of them had video files on their devices. Three of them attempted to upload clips to encrypted cloud drives before our team intercepted them."

"Names?"

"Claire DuPont. Harrison Croft. Julian Mercer."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed. Harrison Croft was the chief executive of an investment bank that relied on Sterling Group’s enterprise infrastructure for its entire trading desk. Julian Mercer was a real estate mogul whose latest high-rise development was currently seeking a two-hundred-million-dollar mezzanine loan from Daniel’s private venture arm.

"Cut the servers for Croft’s trading desk at 9:00 AM on Monday," Daniel commanded without a shred of hesitation. "Cite contract violation under our ethical compliance clause. Inform Mercer that his mezzanine loan is permanently denied. And as for Claire DuPont..."

Daniel paused, remembering the woman’s mocking voice as Lily stood soaked in the grass.

"Buy out the debt on her husband’s shipping firm. Call the notes due within forty-eight hours. Let them see how amusing it is to stand in the cold with nothing to hold onto."

"Understood, sir," Marcus nodded, his face impassive. "And the media leaks?"

"Let the media have the truth," Daniel said, standing up. "Not the sanitized version. I want every parent in this country to know what happens when someone mistakes cruelty for discipline."

He walked toward the door.

"Where are you going, Daniel?" Arthur asked.

"To the only place that matters."
