Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon
Six months later, the courtroom of the U.S. Federal District Court for the Western District of Texas was packed to capacity.
Judge Thomas presiding, his expression grave and severe as he looked down from the elevated bench toward the defense table.
Evelyn Moretti stood in a standard orange federal jumpsuit, her posture no longer proud or commanding, but broken by the reality of a system that didn't care about her past rank. Beside her, Ryan stood in civilian clothes, gaunt, hollow-eyed, and utterly defeated.
"Evelyn Moretti, for the crimes of wire fraud, interstate financial extortion, and aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury under federal enclave jurisdiction, this court sentences you to seven years in a federal correctional institution without the possibility of early parole," Judge Thomas announced, his gavel coming down with a sharp, echoing crack that sealed her fate. "Furthermore, full financial restitution and total asset forfeiture are ordered to recover every illicitly acquired dollar."
Ryan received a lesser sentence of eighteen months for complicity and financial conspiracy, followed by intensive supervised probation, but his military career, his reputation, and his marriage were completely and irrevocably incinerated.
As the bailiffs led them away in handcuffs, Evelyn caught a brief glimpse of me sitting in the front row of the gallery. She tried to lunge forward, her face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated venom, but the armed guards quickly forced her through the heavy wooden side doors.
I didn't flinch. I didn't blink. I simply watched them disappear from my life forever.
Walking out of the federal courthouse into the bright, warm Texas sunshine, I took a deep, steady breath of the open air. The bruised skin on my face had long since healed into a faint, barely noticeable shadow—a scar that served not as a reminder of weakness, but as a permanent emblem of my survival.
