Chapter 9 - The New Dawn

Two months later, the morning sun over Lake Michigan didn't look gray or menacing. It looked like gold leaf spread across an endless sheet of blue.
Serena stood on the private balcony of the penthouse, wrapped in a soft cashmere robe, sipping coffee from a heavy obsidian mug with two drops of honey.
Downstairs, her mother’s medical bills were zeroed out, stamped PAID IN FULL by a charitable foundation that didn't need public applause. Mateo was finishing his junior year at Northwestern with a secured research fellowship at Chicago Memorial Hospital. And Valentina—stubborn, fierce, and entirely recovered—was currently back in Calabria overseeing her lemon groves, having given Serena and Dante her absolute, unapologetic blessing.
Footsteps sounded behind her.
Strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a solid, warm chest. A familiar chin rested gently on her shoulder.
“You’re up early,” Dante murmured, pressing a warm kiss against the crook of her neck.
“I have my first online clinical lecture at eight,” Serena smiled, leaning back into his embrace. “And you have a board meeting at nine. Neither of us can afford to be late.”
Dante chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that vibrated through his chest. He turned her slowly in his arms, his amber eyes bright and completely at peace.
“Let them wait,” Dante said. “The city can run itself for one more hour.”
Serena smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck, looking past him at the sprawling, beautiful, chaotic city of Chicago stretching out beneath them.
