Chapter 4 - Whispers in the ICU

The intensive care unit at Mercy General was quiet save for the rhythmic hiss of ventilators and the sterile beep of vitals monitors.

By dawn, Lily had been moved to a private room in the high-risk antepartum wing, guarded by two off-duty police officers Marcus had arranged through his private firm. The blinds were drawn against the gray morning light. An IV line ran into the back of her right hand, dripping magnesium sulfate to suppress the contractions that still threatened to tear her uterus.

I sat on the low vinyl chair beside her bed, holding her left hand—the one not wrapped in bandages. Her skin was warm now, the terrible gray pallor replaced by a fragile, translucent flush.

Her eyelids fluttered. A long, shuddering sigh passed through her lips.

"Adam..."

"I'm here, sweetheart. I'm right here." I leaned over, pressing my lips to her knuckles, tears burning hot behind my eyelids. "You're safe. You're in the hospital. The baby is alive. His heart is strong."

A single tear leaked from the corner of her eye, tracking into her dark hair. "The baby... is he really okay?"

"He's fighting, Lily. Just like his mother." I swallowed hard, the lump in my throat feeling like broken glass. "I am so sorry. God, Lily, I am so sorry. When I walked into that room... for one terrible minute, I didn't know what to think. My mother had put so many lies in my head—"

"I know," she whispered, her voice rough from the screaming. "She told me. Right before she let Vance in."

I stiffened. "Tell me everything, Lily. Don't leave out a single detail. Marcus is pulling the digital logs from the hidden camera right now, but I need to hear it from you."

Lily looked up at the ceiling, her gaze distant, reliving the terror.

"It was just after ten o'clock," she began, her words slow and deliberate. "I was getting ready for bed. I had just put on my nightgown when I heard the front door unlock. I thought it was you. I ran out to the hallway, smiling... and Eleanor was standing there. She had her own emergency key."

"She said she came because she wanted to give me something," Lily continued, her hand trembling in mine. "She walked into the living room, took off her coat, and sat down on the sofa like she owned the place. Then she opened her handbag and pulled out a manila envelope."

"What was in it?"

"A document," Lily said, her eyes darkening with remembered rage. "A legal document transferring legal guardianship of our unborn child to an offshore trust managed exclusively by the Carter Horizon Board of Directors. And an agreement for me to sign—stating that I had been unfaithful, that the paternity was disputed, and that I agreed to a discreet annulment in exchange for three million dollars."

My blood ran cold. "She tried to buy you off?"

"I laughed at her," Lily whispered, a ghost of her fierce, indomitable spirit flashing across her bruised face. "I told her to get out of my home. I told her that when you got back from New York, you would cut her out of our lives completely. I told her she was a monster."

Lily paused, her breath catching as a dull contraction rippled across her belly. She gripped my hand until her knuckles popped, riding out the pain before continuing.

"That's when her face changed, Adam. She didn't look angry. She looked... bored. She looked at her watch and said, *‘I gave you the dignified way out, my dear. But you are stubborn, just like Julian was. And stubborn weeds must be pulled before they choke the garden.’* Then she opened the front door and waved Vance inside."

"Vance had a black medical bag," Lily wept softly. "He looked terrified, but he did what she told him. They backed me into the bedroom. I tried to reach the phone, but Eleanor ripped it off the nightstand and threw it into the bathroom. Vance pinned my arms. He was shaking, apologizing under his breath, saying *‘It will just look like a spontaneous miscarriage, Lily. Nature takes its course all the time. It’s better for everyone this way.’*"

"I fought them," she whispered, her voice rising in intensity. "I kicked Vance in the groin. He dropped the syringe on the floor. That's when I grabbed the silver frame from the nightstand. I tried to hit him with it, but Eleanor grabbed my hair from behind. The frame hit the corner of the dresser and shattered. I grabbed the biggest shard of glass and slashed Vance across the forearm."

A bitter, triumphant grin touched the corner of her lips despite the agony. "I cut him deep, Adam. Right through his sleeve. He screamed and dropped to the floor, holding his arm. But Eleanor... Eleanor didn't flinch. She grabbed my wrist, twisted it until the glass dropped, and held me down against the mattress while Vance scrambled for another syringe."

"He injected me," Lily choked out, tears pouring down her cheeks. "In the arm. It felt like fire. Like liquid ice moving straight to my womb. They were trying to clean up the blood when Vance looked at his watch and panicked. He said my heart rate was too high, that I might go into shock and die right there, and that would bring the homicide detectives."

"Eleanor was furious," Lily whispered. "She tried to make me look presentable. She pulled the bloody nightgown off me, tried to put a clean one on... but she put it on backward because she was in such a hurry. Then they heard an elevator chime down the hall. They thought it was someone coming to the penthouse. They grabbed their coats, Vance grabbed his bag, and they ran."

"And then you walked in," Lily said, turning her head to look into my eyes. "And you stood in that doorway. And you looked at me like I was a stranger."

The shame that hit me was absolute. It felt like a physical blow to the sternum.

"I will spend the rest of my life making that minute up to you, Lily," I said, my voice thick with unshed tears. "I swear it on my soul. Eleanor Carter will never touch you again. She will never touch our son. I am going to tear down everything she has built."

The door to the ICU room clicked open.

Marcus stepped inside, carrying a secure digital tablet. His face was dead white.

"Adam," he said quietly. "You need to see this. We got the footage from the camera in the frame. But that's not all. I pulled the corporate audit filings for Carter Horizon Pharmaceuticals from the SEC database."

"What did you find?" I asked, rising to my feet.

May you like

Marcus looked from me to Lily, his expression grim. "Your mother isn't doing this because she hates Lily, Adam. She’s doing this because if your son is born alive, Eleanor Carter is going to prison for the rest of her natural life."
