Chapter 4 - Confession in the Dark

The room seemed to shrink instantly, the oxygen burning out as the reality of my presence washed over them like freezing water.

Tyler took a slow step backward, his red plastic cup tipping in his hand, spilling vodka across the kitchen island. His smile had completely dissolved, replaced by a wide, wet panic.

"Mr... Mr. Harper?" Tyler stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched register. "What... what are you doing here? I thought you were overseas—"

"You thought a lot of things, Tyler," I said, taking two slow, deliberate steps toward him. The floorboards beneath my boots didn't creak; every movement was calibrated, rhythmic, and terrifying. "You thought you could use your school credentials to bypass my home security system. You thought you could steal from my desk while my daughter was upstairs. And when she caught you red-handed, you thought a sixteen-year-old girl was an acceptable casualty for your weekend trip to Vegas."

The three other teenagers—Kyle and two girls cowering near the kitchen counter—slid away from Tyler as if he carried a contagious disease, their faces pale with absolute terror.

"I didn't mean to—it was an accident!" Tyler blurted out, stumbling backward until his spine hit the refrigerator. His hands came up defensively. "It was Marcus! Marcus hit her! I swear I tried to stop him!"

"Liar," I whispered.

In a fraction of a second, before any of them could blink, I crossed the distance between us. My hand shot out like a striking viper, gripping the collar of Tyler’s designer hoodie. I lifted him effortlessly off his feet, slamming him against the stainless-steel surface of the refrigerator with enough force to rattle the magnets and make the entire appliance shudder.

Air exploded from Tyler's lungs in a sharp wheeze. His eyes bulged, and his hands clawed desperately at my wrists, but my grip was like hydraulic steel.

"Where is Marcus?" I asked, my face inches from his. My voice didn't rise; it stayed low, even, and utterly lethal. "Give me a name, an address, or a phone number right now, or I swear to God I will dismantle you piece by piece right here in your own kitchen."

"H-He's... he's at the warehouse!" Tyler choked out, tears streaming down his face as snot mixed with saliva around his trembling lips. "Down by the old shipping yards off industrial parkway! Warehouse 4! He's hiding out there with the cash!"

I stared into his terrified eyes, searching for any flicker of deceit. There was none. He was broken, shattered down to his primal core.

"Mr. Harper, please—don't kill me!" Tyler sobbed, his legs dangling weakly as my grip held him suspended.

"Killing you would be a mercy, Tyler," I whispered, my face a mask of absolute granite. "Death is clean. Death is quick. But you... you are going to wait right here for the police. You are going to confess to every single federal and state felony you've committed today. And if you even think about moving an inch before the sirens arrive..."

I pressed my forearm slightly harder against his windpipe, just enough to remind him of what darkness looked like.

"...I will find you."

I dropped him. Tyler crumpled onto the kitchen floor like a broken marionette, gasping for air, coughing, and weeping hysterically.

May you like

I turned around, ignoring the three frozen teenagers cowering against the counter, and walked back out through the sliding glass door into the night.

The war had only just begun. Warehouse 4 was waiting.
