Chapter 6 - The New Horizon

Six months later, the spring sun over Chicago was warm enough to coax the first green shoots from the window boxes along Michigan Avenue.
Inside the sprawling top-floor office of Whitmore-Carter Technologies—formerly Carter Dynamics, now fully rebranded and consolidated under my sole corporate control—the view of the lake was unobstructed by clouds.
The IPO had gone through three weeks earlier at a record-shattering valuation. The fallout from the federal investigation into Grant’s shell companies had been swift, clean, and devastatingly thorough; he was currently awaiting trial in federal custody, while Lily Dawson had cooperated with prosecutors in exchange for immunity, quietly retreating back to West Virginia with her son.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, holding a porcelain mug of black coffee, watching the tiny white sails of boats tacking across the blue water.
The office door opened softly.
Claire walked in, carrying a thick binder wrapped in a blue leather band. She looked tired, but her eyes were bright with the satisfied gleam of a warrior who had won every battle on the field.
“The final asset forfeiture settlement from the Lake Forest property has cleared,” Claire said, setting the binder down on my desk. “The court awarded full restitution to the corporate accounts, and the remaining liquidation proceeds have been transferred to the Whitmore Foundation.”
“Good,” I said without turning around.
Claire walked over and stood beside me, looking out at the skyline.
“You know, Emily,” she said thoughtfully, “most people in your position would have spent the last six months bitter, angry, or looking for revenge.”
I took a slow sip of my coffee, feeling the warmth spread through my chest.
“Revenge is just another way of letting them stay in your head, Claire,” I replied softly. “I didn't fight back out of anger. I fought back because my father taught me one thing above all else.”
Claire raised an eyebrow. “What’s that?”
May you like
I smiled, my gaze resting on the distant horizon where the sky met the water in an unbroken line of bright, uncompromising blue.
“Never let someone who doesn't know your value write the final chapter of your story.”
