Chapter 2 - The Invisible Scars

Over the next forty-eight hours, Luca watched Elena Bennett with a scrutiny he usually reserved for rival syndicate bosses.

He noticed things he had previously dismissed as background noise. He saw the faint, angry red cuts across her knuckles—not from routine cleaning, but from harsh chemical abrasions she was forced to use without proper protection. He noticed the dark, heavy exhaustion bruised deep beneath her eyes, the kind born of working twenty-hour days without adequate sleep or rest.

Most importantly, he noticed the strange, unsettling way she became completely rigid, silent, and submissive whenever his fiancée, Isabella Vance, entered a room.

Isabella was the daughter of a prominent shipping tycoon, a match arranged to solidify Luca’s international trade routes. To the public—and to Luca—she was the epitome of grace. She wore designer gowns, smiled dazzlingly at charity galas, and spoke with a honeyed, elegant voice.

When Luca was watching, Isabella treated the staff with polite indifference.

But two days after the incident in the office, Luca’s afternoon meetings wrapped up early. He decided to skip his usual security detail and walked quietly through the east wing toward his private study.

As he approached the grand dining hall, he heard Isabella’s voice echoing sharply against the marble walls.

"Do it again."

Luca stopped in his tracks, his hand hovering over the brass doorknob.

Elena stood beside the massive, twenty-seat mahogany dining table, her head bowed low, her hands trembling as she smoothed out a heavy lace tablecloth.

Isabella stood a few feet away, holding a crystal wine glass, her face twisted into a look of cold, aristocratic cruelty. She pointed a manicured finger down at a microscopic crease in the fabric.

"All of it. Take it off, press it again, and if there is a single wrinkle when I return, you can pack your bags and sleep on the streets with your little brat," Isabella hissed, her sweet public persona entirely vanished.

Elena didn't argue. She didn't cry. She simply whispered, "Yes, Miss Vance," and began unpinning the heavy cloth with bruised, shaking fingers.

Then, Isabella looked up.

Her eyes caught the reflection in the polished antique mirror across the room. She saw Luca standing motionless in the doorway, his dark eyes fixed entirely on her.

The cruel sneer melted off Isabella’s face in a microsecond, replaced instantly by a breathless, fluttering smile. She whirled around on her high heels.

"Darling!" Isabella chimed, crossing the room with a warm, radiant expression, her arms opening wide. "You're home early! I was just inspecting the table settings for tonight’s dinner party. Isn’t Elena doing a... well, an adequate job?"

Elena kept her eyes locked firmly on the floor, her shoulders tense, her breath shallow.

Luca didn't move toward Isabella. He didn't accept her embrace. He walked slowly past her, his gaze lingering on Elena’s raw, red hands before shifting up to meet Isabella’s nervous, darting eyes.

"An adequate job, Isabella?" Luca’s voice was dangerously low, carrying the weight of a loaded gun.

Isabella’s smile faltered slightly. "Of course, Luca. You know how meticulous I am about the estate standards."

Luca said nothing more. He turned and walked into his study, closing the heavy door behind him. But as he sat down at his desk, a cold, bitter realization settled deep into his chest.

For the first time, he wondered what else happened inside his own house when no one thought he was watching. And more importantly, he remembered a little girl in a yellow dress sitting in his chair, whispering a command that he could no longer ignore.
