Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Sharks

By Sunday evening, the Sterling estate resembled a war room disguised as a luxury manor.
Uncle Martin had arrived with his personal legal counsel, a slick, expensive corporate shark named Henderson who carried a leather briefcase stuffed with hostile takeover provisions, proxy votes, and emergency receivership documents. They had set themselves up in the formal dining room, treating the house as already conquered territory.
From the second-floor landing, I watched through the wrought-iron banister as Vanessa walked arm-in-arm with my cousin Richard through the main foyer. They were laughing—a low, conspiratorial murmur of shared triumph.
“Darling,” Richard purred, running a hand down Vanessa’s bare shoulder, “once the board declares him incapacitated tomorrow, the emergency succession clause kicks in. Within forty-eight hours, I’ll be interim CEO, and we can finally announce our merger—both corporate and personal.”
Vanessa smiled, tilting her chin up with an air of aristocratic entitlement. “Just make sure his signature is legally binding on the asset transfer before he’s shipped off to that private sanitarium in Vermont. I want my settlement secured in liquid capital before the week is out.”
They thought they had won. They believed the narrative they had constructed.
Behind them, moving quietly across the marble foyer with a silver dusting cloth in her hand, was Clara. She paused near the grand staircase, her eyes meeting mine briefly through the iron bars of the banister. She gave a single, imperceptible nod.
