Chapter 5 - THE STAGING OF THE SHAM

As the main course was cleared and dessert wines were poured, the atmosphere in the dining room shifted from polite corporate celebration to something charged with illicit electricity.

Brandon stood up once more, his cheeks flushed with alcohol and the dizzying high of absolute power. He cleared his throat dramatically, signaling to the room that the main event was about to begin.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Brandon began, his voice dripping with false humility and theatrical gravitas. “Before we move to the terrace for cognac and cigars, there is an announcement I need to make—one that involves a transition in both my professional and my personal life.”

The entire table fell dead silent. Heads turned toward him in rapt attention. Arthur Sterling leaned forward, frowning slightly in confusion.

Nicole lowered her gaze demurely, playing her part with the practiced grace of a seasoned actress stepping into her opening night.

“For some time now,” Brandon continued, pitching his voice into a tone of sorrowful, heroic sacrifice, “Madison and I have drifted down separate paths. Despite my best efforts to keep our personal and professional partnership afloat, the emotional distance between us has become... insurmountable.”

He paused, letting the heavy weight of a manufactured tragedy settle over the room. Several guests murmured sympathetic noises, casting pitying glances in my direction.

I didn't flinch. I took a slow, deliberate sip of my Cabernet Sauvignon, resting my chin on my hand as I watched him hang himself with every single syllable.

“However,” Brandon pressed on, his voice lifting into a bright, optimistic cadence, “life moves forward. And true partnership is found where mutual respect and shared ambitions align. Over the past four years, as I navigated the complexities of corporate growth, I found an extraordinary anchor in someone who truly understands me, supports my vision, and shares my values.”

He turned, extending a hand toward Nicole down the table.

Nicole stood up gracefully, her white silk gown shimmering under the crystal chandelier. She walked around the table, her steps measured and deliberate, right to Brandon’s side. He wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close against his hip in front of fifty of the most influential people in the city.

“Nicole and I have decided to combine our lives,” Brandon announced triumphantly, his chest puffed out like a peacock. “Once my legal separation from Madison is finalized next week—backed by the corporate restructuring documents signed this very Friday—we intend to formalize our union. In fact, why wait?”

He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a velvet box, and snapped it open to reveal a massive, glittering sapphire ring surrounded by diamonds—the exact pendant and ring set Nicole had drooled over in the downtown boutique while complaining about her empty pantry.

A collective gasp echoed around the dining room. Several people whispered in shock; others sat frozen, staring at the sheer audacity of a man publicly proposing to his wife’s best friend over leftover dessert.

Nicole covered her mouth with mock-surprise, tears welling in her eyes. “Brandon... oh, Brandon, are you sure? Right here? In front of everyone?”

“I’ve never been surer of anything in my life,” Brandon declared, playing to the gallery with nauseating theatricality. “We are starting a new family. Tyler is already calling me dad. And starting tonight, Nicole is moving into the master suite as the rightful co-owner of everything we’ve built.”

Silence hung in the room—a thick, suffocating silence where nobody quite knew whether to clap, walk out, or call security.

Brandon stood tall, basking in the spotlight, waiting for the applause, the congratulations, the validation of his grand conquest.

Instead, I slowly set my wine glass down on the table. The sharp clink of crystal against mahogany echoed like a gunshot through the room.

I stood up, smoothing down the emerald velvet of my gown, and walked slowly around the table until I was standing directly opposite Brandon and Nicole.

My expression wasn't angry, tearful, or broken. It was a cold, radiant smile of absolute, terrifying amusement.

“That was a truly breathtaking performance, Brandon,” I said, my voice carrying a smooth, musical cadence that cut right through the stillness. “An Oscar-worthy production. The lighting, the timing, the emotional range—truly magnificent.”

Brandon’s triumphant smile twitched, faltering for a microsecond. “Mads... let’s not make a scene. It’s over. You signed the papers. Just accept gracefully—”

“Accept gracefully?” I laughed softly, a bright, melodic sound that made several guests shiver. I turned my gaze toward Nicole, who was suddenly looking very pale beneath her heavy foundation. “And Nicole, darling... congratulations on the ring. I’m glad my charity work over the last four years finally paid off with such glittering dividends.”

“Madison, don't be bitter—” Nicole stammered, stepping back slightly against Brandon’s shoulder.

“Bitter?” I arched an eyebrow, turning back to face the entire room of stunned executives and bankers. “Oh, no, my friends. I’m not bitter at all. In fact, I am profoundly grateful to my husband. Because without his theatrical flair, we wouldn't have nearly enough entertainment for tonight’s real main event.”

Brandon’s face lost every trace of color. His eyes widened in sudden, creeping panic. “Mads... what are you talking about? Sit down.”

“Oh, I am sitting down right after the show, sweetie,” I replied sweetly.

I turned toward my son at the end of the table.

“Ethan, bug,” I called out clearly. “Would you mind turning on the home entertainment system? I think our guests are ready for the screening.”
