Chapter 10 - The Unshakable Foundation

Spring arrived in Ohio with a rush of emerald green grass, blooming tulips, and warm Saturday mornings that invited us outside.
It was a year to the day since my father’s phone call had blown my world apart.
Instead of dwelling on the anniversary, Emily, Sophie, and I spent the morning in the backyard. We were planting a small garden near the back fence—rows of bright red tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, and a patch of wild sunflowers that Sophie insisted would "grow taller than the house."
The soil was rich, dark, and damp against my hands as I pressed a seed gently into the earth.
Sophie knelt beside me, her small garden gloves covered in dirt, carefully patting down the soil around her sunflower seeds.
"Daddy, do you think they'll grow really tall?" she asked, looking up at me with bright, hopeful eyes.
"I know they will, bug," I smiled, wiping a smudge of dirt off her cheek with the back of my wrist. "As long as we give them good soil, plenty of water, and protect them from the weeds, they'll grow as high as the sky."
Sophie beamed, satisfied with the answer, and went back to digging in the dirt.
I stood up slowly, wiping my hands on my jeans, and looked out across our yard. Our home was modest, our mortgage was steady, and our lives were entirely our own. There were no invisible strings attached to our happiness, no hidden taxes levied on our peace, and no conditional affection waiting to be withdrawn.
Emily walked over, handing me a cold bottle of water. She leaned her head against my shoulder, following my gaze out toward the quiet street where kids were riding bikes and neighbors were waving hello.
"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.
I wrapped my arm around her waist, pulling her close, feeling the solid, unshakable weight of the life we had built together with our own hands.
May you like
"I was just thinking," I murmured, taking a sip of the cold water, "that some foundations are meant to be broken. So you can finally build something real."
Emily smiled, kissing my cheek, and together we stood in the warm spring sunlight, watching our daughter plant her future in soil that was entirely our own.
