Chapter 6 - THE POLICE INTERROGATION AND THE HOUSE OF CARDS

Three days later, I was sitting propped up in a private recovery suite on the fourth floor of St. Matthew’s Memorial Hospital.

Outside my window, the morning sun was breaking over the Chicago skyline, casting a golden glow across the quiet, antiseptic room. In the corner, two clear plastic bassinet cribs sat side by side, housing my newborn son and daughter. They were sleeping peacefully, breathing in unison, safely wrapped in soft cotton blankets.

The door to my room clicked open softly.

Detective Marcus Vance—the senior lead investigator assigned to the case—stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder and a digital tablet. Behind him stood two uniform officers.

“Good morning, Mrs. Mercer,” Detective Vance said, his voice respectful and subdued. “How are you holding up physically?”

“I’m recovering, Detective,” I replied steadily, resting my hand on the blanket. “My leg is still in a brace from the hip fracture, but the doctors say I’ll walk again with physical therapy. More importantly… how are my babies?”

Detective Vance offered a reassuring, tired smile. “Pediatricians cleared them for discharge monitoring yesterday. They’re strong, healthy fighters, Mrs. Mercer. They take after their mother.”

I managed a weak, appreciative smile. “Thank you. What about Grant and Vanessa?”

Detective Vance’s smile vanished, replaced by the grim professionalism of a veteran homicide and white-collar crimes detective. He pulled up a chair beside my bed and opened his tablet.

“Your husband and Vanessa Hale are currently being held at the Cook County Department of Corrections without bond,” Detective Vance stated clearly. “And I can assure you, Mrs. Mercer, they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.”

My breath caught. “What charges have been filed?”

“For Vanessa Hale: attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault resulting in severe bodily injury, and reckless endangerment,” Detective Vance listed off, tapping the screen. “She cracked under questioning within four hours of her arrest. She confessed that Grant promised her a full partnership in his offshore investment portfolio if she helped him force an emergency delivery or miscarriage to void your marital asset rights before a pending divorce filing he had secretly drawn up last month.”

A cold shiver ran down my spine, even though I already knew the depths of my husband’s depravity.

“And Grant?” I asked, my voice dropping to a whisper.

“For Grant Mercer: conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation of assault, insurance and medical fraud, and felony child endangerment,” the detective said, his eyes locking onto mine. “Furthermore, our forensic financial audit of Dr. Adrian Keller’s fertility clinic—which was raided by federal marshals two nights ago—has uncovered a massive, illegal embryo-swapping and surrogate-substitution ring.”

I stared at him in stunned silence. “Embryo-swapping?”

“Dr. Keller was running a black-market fertility optimization program for wealthy corporate clients who wanted specific genetic combinations without their primary spouses knowing,” Detective Vance explained grimly. “In your case, Mrs. Mercer, DNA profiling of the tissue samples seized from Keller’s clinic proves that the egg cells implanted during your third IVF cycle did not belong to an anonymous donor at all. They belonged to Vanessa Hale.”

The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

Vanessa Hale.

My husband’s mistress hadn't just been sleeping with him in secret. She had donated her own eggs—fertilized with Grant’s sperm—and had them implanted into my gestational body under the fraudulent guise of my own medical treatment, creating a biological Trojan horse designed to legally usurp my maternal standing under corrupt state reproductive loopholes that Keller had helped them exploit.

“My God,” I whispered, my hands flying to cover my mouth as tears of pure, burning disgust spilled down my cheeks. “They used my body as an incubator for his mistress’s children.”

“They thought they were invincible,” Detective Vance said softly, placing a comforting hand on the edge of my mattress. “They thought money, high-priced lawyers, and medical intimidation could bury the truth. But they made one fatal mistake.”

“What’s that?”

“They underestimated a mother fighting for her children,” the detective said.

He slid a final document across the tray table toward me. It was an emergency parental rights and sole custody petition, pre-approved and signed by the family court magistrate judge, granting me 100% legal and physical custody of the twins, while freezing all of Grant Mercer’s corporate assets, bank accounts, and trust holdings pending criminal forfeiture.

“Sign here, Mrs. Mercer,” Detective Vance said gently, handing me a silver pen. “And the nightmare is officially over.”
