Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Two months passed with the quiet, inexorable speed of healing wounds.

My uncle Arthur’s trial didn't last three days. Faced with the mountain of financial records recovered from the old West Virginia timber trusts, federal prosecutors dismantled his entire network of shell companies within weeks. He pleaded guilty to fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy, accepting a prison sentence that ensured he would spend the rest of his natural life behind bars.

The basement apartment on South Ashland Avenue was gone.

In its place, Julian had quietly purchased a spacious, sunlit townhome just three blocks from the estate, featuring wide hallways, hardwood floors, and a bright yellow bedroom where Brandon and Emma finally had space to breathe, play, and grow without the constant, gnawing terror of hunger.

Brandon’s cough was gone, replaced by the sound of him laughing as he chased a golden retriever across the estate's sprawling lawn. Emma no longer clutched her broken doll with desperate, quiet sorrow; she had a shelf full of new books and a desk where she spent hours drawing pictures of horses and castles.

And I stayed at the mansion.

Not as a desperate, terrified maid hiding from a secret, but as Julian’s partner in rebuilding everything he had lost.

On a clear Saturday morning in May, sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master suite, painting the Persian rugs in warm, golden squares.

I stood beside the mahogany desk, organizing a stack of financial portfolios, when Julian wheeled himself over from the terrace, a fresh cup of coffee steaming in his hand.
