Chapter 6 - The Collapse of the Empire

Back in Denver, Ryan Parker’s life was disintegrating faster than a house of cards in a hurricane.

Sitting in the leather executive chair of his downtown engineering firm office, Ryan stared blankly at his computer screen. The stock price of his subsidiary had plummeted twelve percent in two days following the viral spread of his Aspen video and the breaking news reports of his wife’s mysterious disappearance.

The intercom on his desk buzzed sharply.

“Mr. Parker?” his executive assistant’s voice trembled through the speaker. “You have... visitors in the lobby. Two federal agents and our chief corporate counsel.”

Before Ryan could answer, the heavy oak door of his office swung open.

Marcus Sterling, senior partner at Sterling & Vance Corporate Law, walked in, flanked by two men in dark suits bearing federal badges. Marcus looked at Ryan not with the deference due a company president, but with icy, unmitigated disgust.

“Pack your things, Ryan,” Marcus said flatly, tossing a thick manila folder onto the mahogany desk.

Ryan stood up, his face flushed with panicked anger. “What is the meaning of this?! I am the founder of this company! You can’t just walk into my office—!”

“The board of directors held an emergency vote thirty minutes ago,” Marcus interrupted, his voice cutting through Ryan’s protests like a buzzsaw. “Under Section 9 of our corporate governance charter, any executive whose actions bring catastrophic moral turpitude and criminal liability upon the firm is subject to immediate, unceremonious termination and forfeiture of voting shares.”

Ryan staggered backward, gripping the edge of his desk. “Criminal liability? I haven't been convicted of anything!”

“You’re under active criminal investigation for domestic neglect and reckless endangerment resulting in near-fatal injury to your postpartum wife,” one of the federal agents stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. “Ryan Parker, you have the right to remain silent...”

“No! Wait!” Ryan shrieked, backing away toward the panoramic glass windows overlooking the Denver skyline. “This is a mistake! Emma left! She took the baby! Someone else kidnapped them! I was framed!”

“You framed yourself the moment you posted a celebratory selfie while your wife bled out on a nursery floor,” Marcus said coldly, turning his back on him. “Take him away.”

The heavy steel cuffs clicked shut around Ryan’s wrists. The man who had stood on a luxury resort balcony three days earlier laughing at the world was now shoved face-first against his own mahogany desk, humiliated, powerless, and utterly destroyed.

The empire he had built on vanity and selfishness had finally caved in on its own rotten foundation.
