Chapter 5 - The Corporate Execution

The sun was just beginning to spill its golden light over the Chicago skyline when Dante Moretti returned to the Lake Shore safehouse.

I hadn't slept a wink. I had spent the entire night pacing the minimalist concrete floors, watching the waves crash against the lake wall, wrestling with the terrifying reality that my old world was gone forever. I was no longer Cara Fields, the exhausted waitress dodging rude customers at Bellini’s. I was a ghost caught in the orbit of the most dangerous man on the East Coast.

When the front doors clicked open, I rushed out of the guest suite just as Dante walked into the foyer.

He looked immaculate, having changed into a fresh, tailored charcoal suit that hid any trace of his injuries, though he walked with a barely perceptible stiffness in his stride. Behind him, Marcus and three other armed operatives carried thick leather briefcases and heavy digital storage drives.

“It’s over,” Dante said, reading the anxious question in my eyes before I could even speak.

“Did they... did they get away?” I asked, gripping the lapels of my robe.

“People like Vanessa and Julian never get away,” Dante replied coldly, tossing his keys onto the entry console. “They made it as far as the private airfield in Gary, Indiana. My men were waiting on the tarmac before their pilot even finished his pre-flight check. They’re currently sitting in a very cold, very secure basement waiting for the board of directors meeting I’ve called for nine o'clock this morning.”

I blinked, stunned. “A board meeting? You’re not going to kill them?”

A chilling, humorless smile touched Dante’s lips. “Killing is messy, Cara. And it’s entirely too quick for people who tried to orchestrate a patricide for corporate shares. I’m going to do something much worse. I’m going to strip them of every single cent, every drop of power, and every shred of public dignity they possess. Then I’m going to let the federal authorities pick up the pieces.”

Two hours later, I found myself sitting in the back of a bulletproof sedan, parked across the street from the towering glass-and-steel monolith of Moretti Global Enterprises downtown.

Dante had insisted I come along, claiming he didn't trust leaving me unattended while his security sweep was still finalizing the perimeter. He had provided me with a sophisticated, off-the-rack designer pantsuit that actually fit me, though I still felt like an impostor wearing thousand-dollar wool while watching corporate executives stream through the revolving glass doors.

“Are you ready?” Dante asked quietly as our car pulled up to the VIP underground garage entrance.

I looked at him, my heart hammering against my ribs. “For what? To watch you ruin your wife’s life?”

“To watch justice being served on my terms,” Dante corrected, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made it impossible to look away. “Stay close to Marcus. When it’s over, we’re leaving this city for a while. Both of us.”

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor was a masterclass in intimidation. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking view of the city, while a massive circular quartz table sat at the center, surrounded by twelve members of the board of directors.

When the double doors opened and Dante Moretti walked into the room—alive, uninjured, and radiating an aura of absolute dominance—the entire board gasped in unison. Several older men dropped their pens.

Sitting near the head of the table, impeccably dressed in a white Chanel suit, Vanessa Moretti froze mid-sentence. Her wine-glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the quartz table, spilling red liquid like blood across the pristine surface.

Beside her, Julian Vance went entirely white, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of his chair.

“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,” Dante’s deep, resonant voice cut through the stunned silence of the room like a razor. He walked calmly to the head of the table, pulling out the primary leather chair and sitting down with deliberate slowness. “I apologize for the rumors of my demise. Apparently, reports of my death were greatly exaggerated.”

Vanessa managed to find her voice, though it shook violently. “Dante... how... how is this possible? We saw the car... we thought...”

“You thought your clever little brake-cutting scheme had successfully eliminated your husband so you could seize his proxy shares,” Dante finished smoothly for her, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table. He snapped his fingers, and Marcus stepped forward, dropping a thick manila folder and a series of digital flash drives in front of the lead board member.

“What is the meaning of this?” demanded Arthur Pendelton, the senior board partner.

“That folder,” Dante said, never breaking eye contact with his terrified wife, “contains complete forensic proof of an illegal embezzlement scheme orchestrated by Julian Vance, funneling over four million dollars of corporate assets into offshore shell companies known as V.C. Holdings—controlled jointly by my chief logistics manager and my loving wife.”

Gasps erupted around the table. Julian opened his mouth to protest, but Dante silenced him with a single, lethal glare.

“Furthermore,” Dante continued, his voice dropping into a chilling register, “audio transcripts captured last night confirm an active conspiracy to commit first-degree murder via vehicle sabotage. The local authorities have already been provided with the complete evidence file. The federal indictments for racketeering, fraud, and attempted murder are currently being processed as we speak.”

Vanessa stood up so fast her chair screeched against the floor. Tears of rage and pure terror streamed down her face, shattering her composed socialite facade entirely.

“You son of a bitch!” she screamed, lunging across the table toward Dante. “You planned this! You set us up!”

Marcus stepped forward instantly, blocking her path with a cold, unyielding wall of muscle.

Two federal marshals, tipped off by Dante’s legal team, chose that exact second to push open the boardroom doors. They walked straight to Vanessa and Julian, reading them their Miranda rights as the horrified board members watched in absolute silence.

As Vanessa was dragged away in handcuffs, screaming obscenities and clawing at the air, she caught sight of me standing quietly near the back of the room. Her eyes widened with absolute venom.

“You!” she shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at me. “It was you! You filthy little waitress!”

The heavy oak doors closed, cutting off her screams as the marshals escorted them away.

The boardroom was left in a heavy, suffocating silence. Dante stood up slowly, looking around the stunned faces of his board members.

“The meeting is adjourned,” Dante said coldly. “My legal team will handle the restructuring. Effective immediately, all operations of Moretti Global are suspended for twenty-four hours.”

As the executives scrambled out of the room like rats fleeing a sinking ship, Dante turned around and walked slowly toward me.

The storm had passed. The enemies were broken. But as I stood there in the center of the empty boardroom, I realized that the quiet, ordinary life of Cara Fields was gone forever.

And the man standing in front of me was about to offer a world I never knew existed.
