Chapter 10 - Setting the Table

The sun dipped below the Virginia horizon on a crisp Friday evening in September, painting the sky in brilliant shades of violet, amber, and gold.

Inside our McLean home, the dining room table was set for dinner.

There were no cheap plastic trays. There were no leftover bowls of cold rice pushed into a corner. There were no snide remarks about bloodlines, sons, or patriarchal legacy.

The table was draped in fine white linen, adorned with silver candlesticks, crystal glassware, and a centerpiece of fresh white lilies and yellow daisies picked by Sophia and Chloe earlier that afternoon.

Dad sat at the end of the table, laughing as Chloe showed him a drawing she had made of our golden retriever wearing a superhero cape.

Sophia sat to my right, carefully folding her cloth napkin just the way I had taught her.

As I walked out of the kitchen carrying a steaming ceramic casserole dish, I paused for a moment in the doorway, taking in the scene.

My daughters were growing up in a world where their voices mattered, where their intelligence was celebrated, and where their worth was never questioned by anyone—least of all the people who claimed to love them.

I set the dish down in the center of the table and took my seat at the head of the table.

Sophia looked up, her dark eyes shining with bright, unshakeable confidence.

“Mom?” she asked softly.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Is this our table now?”

I smiled, reaching out to take both of my daughters’ small hands in mine, feeling the warm, enduring strength of a future we had built with our own hands.

“Yes, baby,” I said, looking around our home, our family, and our unshakeable peace. “This is our table. And we will never, ever let anyone take our seats again.”
