Chapter 8 - The Ghost at the Gate

Clara had walked up behind Alexander to see what was happening on the screen. The moment her eyes landed on the face in the monitor, the color drained completely from her face. She let out a sharp, horrified gasp, stumbling backward until her hip hit the edge of the kitchen counter.

"No," she whispered, her hands flying to her mouth, her eyes wide with unmitigated terror. "No, how did he find us? How is that possible?"

Alexander turned instantly, pulling Clara into his arms and holding her tightly against his chest as she began to tremble. "Who is that, Clara? Tell me."

"It's Richard," she sobbed, the name tearing out of her throat like jagged glass. "My ex-husband. He... he walked out on us four years ago when Rosie was three. He drained our bank accounts, left us with eviction notices, and disappeared into the shadows of Pittsburgh. He... he's dangerous, Alexander. He has a record. If he knows we're here, if he thinks we have money or stability, he'll tear our lives apart."

On the monitor screen, Richard slammed his fist against the iron gate again, leaning close to the camera lens, a nasty, desperate grin twisting his features.

Alexander's jaw tightened until the muscles ached. A cold, lethal fury settled deep into his chest, replacing the warmth that had filled the guesthouse moments before. Nobody—nobody—was going to come onto his property and terrorize the people he cared about.

"Rosie!" Alexander called out firmly, raising his voice just enough without panicking the little girl.

Rosie poked her head out from her bedroom door, her smile fading when she saw her mother crying. "Mr. Hale? What's wrong?"

"Sweetheart, I need you to stay in your room for a few minutes and finish your puzzle," Alexander said, keeping his tone calm and steady. "I have to handle something outside. Your mom and I are right here. Nothing is going to happen to you. I promise."

Rosie nodded, her eyes wide with fear, and retreated back into her room, closing the door softly.

Alexander turned back to Clara, gripping her shoulders firmly and looking deep into her eyes. "Listen to me, Clara. You are safe here. Do you understand me? This is my property, my gates, my security. That man is not stepping one foot inside this house."

"He'll cause a scene, he'll threaten us, he'll go to the police or the courts—" Clara stammered, panic threatening to overwhelm her.

"Let him try," Alexander said, his voice dropping into an absolute, unyielding register of corporate and personal authority. "My legal team can bury a parasite like him in paperwork before he even knows what hit him. Stay inside with Rosie. I'm going out to handle this."

Alexander grabbed his heavy wool coat, pulled on his leather gloves, and walked out the front door of the guesthouse, striding purposefully across the snowy lawn toward the main security gates.
