Chapter 6 - Level Ground

Ten minutes later, I had opened the folder, verified the legal documents, and filed them away in my home office cabinet.

I walked back out to the kitchen, where Lily was sitting at the counter, happily dipping a warm chocolate chip cookie into a glass of cold milk.

She looked up at me, her brown eyes bright and untroubled.

“Who was at the door, Mom?” she asked around a bite of cookie.

I smiled, walking over to wrap my arms around her shoulders, pulling her close against my chest.

“Nobody important, sweetie,” I whispered, resting my chin softly against her hair. “Just a visitor dropping off some old papers.”

Lily nodded, satisfied with the answer, and went back to her snack.

I looked out the large kitchen window toward the bright, sunlit street outside. The wind rustled the green leaves of the trees lining the avenue, steady and strong.

For years, I had lived under the heavy, oppressive shadow of a family that believed entitlement trumped truth, and that love could be demanded through manipulation and control. They had tried to write my story for me, assuming I would simply break under their weight.

Instead, I had held my ground. I had protected my child. And in doing so, I had learned the ultimate lesson my grandmother used to teach when I was a little girl playing with wooden blocks:

If a structure isn't built level, it eventually collapses under its own weight.

My foundation was finally level. And nothing in this world was ever going to shake it again.
