Chapter 7 - The Snowfall at Lake Tahoe

The descent into Incline Village was shrouded in a heavy, blinding alpine snowstorm.
Dense white flakes whipped horizontally across the windshields of the three black-and-white cruisers as they crept silently down the winding mountain road toward Pinecrest Estates. The temperature had plunged well below freezing, turning the wet asphalt into a treacherous sheet of black ice.
Mark sat in the back of the third cruiser, staring out the frost-rimed window at the towering, snow-laden pine trees rushing past in the dark. His hands were stuffed deep into the pockets of his heavy winter coat, clutching the small, worn silver pocket watch that had belonged to his late brother Aaron—a final heirloom he carried like a talisman.
Aaron, Mark thought silently as the wind howled against the car doors. I failed you once. I trusted the wrong person. But I'm going to fix it now.
The convoy reached the gates of Pinecrest Estates. The security gate was bypassed instantly using a master override code provided by the U.S. Marshal service. The vehicles rolled silently over the freshly plowed tarmac, their headlights extinguished to maintain total tactical surprise, relying only on night-vision gear and dash-mounted navigation.
They stopped fifty yards from Building Four.
Four armed federal agents clad in tactical vests and helmets slipped out of the lead cruisers like ghosts in the falling snow, their assault rifles held across their chests. They moved with absolute, silent discipline toward the staircase leading up to Unit 412 on the second floor.
Mark stepped out of his cruiser, ignoring the biting alpine wind that instantly whipped through his jacket. He stood near the rear bumper, his eyes locked on the lighted second-story window behind whose frosted glass Reena Davis was currently hiding.
Through the encrypted tactical radio clipped to the front seat of the cruiser, Mark could hear the muffled chatter of the team leader.
"Position one in place." "Position two in place." "Breaching in three... two... one."
CRASH.
The sound of the heavy reinforced door splintering inward echoed sharply across the quiet courtyard, followed instantly by a chorus of sharp, military commands.
"Federal agents! Down on the ground! Do it now! Hands where we can see them!"
Inside the apartment, a shrill, frantic scream pierced the night air—a sound of absolute, unmitigated panic.

"No! No, you can't touch me! I didn't do anything! Get away from me!" Reena’s voice shrieked, instantly recognizable even over the howling wind.
Mark started walking forward, his boots crunching heavily across the fresh snow, closing the distance between the courtyard and the staircase. He didn't care about the tactical line anymore. He needed to see her. He needed to look into the eyes of the woman who had smiled at him across holiday dinner tables while she starved his brother's children in the dark.
