Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

On a crisp Saturday morning in late November, right before Thanksgiving, we decided to overhaul Sophie’s bedroom decor.

She wanted a change of color scheme—moving away from pinks and purples into deep forest greens and warm autumn golds.

As we pulled everything off her walls, taking down posters, sticky notes, and school awards, Sophie carefully unhooked the silver-framed spelling bee certificate from its spot above her desk.

She walked over to me, holding it out with both hands.

“Mom, should we hang this up in the new room, or put it in my keepsake box?” she asked thoughtfully.

I knelt down beside her, looking at the silver frame, tracing the delicate, clear-taped cracks across the paper where Margaret’s hands had tried to tear her down two years ago.

“Where do you think it belongs, Soph?” I asked gently.

Sophie smiled—a bright, fearless, unburdened smile that reached all the way to her eyes.

She walked over to the center of the wall, right where the morning sunlight hit the paint directly, and hammered a small nail into the drywall herself. With careful precision, she hung the frame back up.

“Right here,” she declared, stepping back to admire it. “Where I can see it every single day.”

“Why?” I asked, wrapping my arms around her shoulders from behind.

“Because it reminds me that even when someone tries to break something you worked hard for, you can always put the pieces back together,” she said wisely, looking up at me with eyes so full of clarity it took my breath away. “And the cracks just let the light shine through.”

Downstairs, the front door opened, and Daniel’s voice drifted up the stairwell, calling out our names as he lugged grocery bags of Thanksgiving supplies into the kitchen. Ava bounded down the stairs to help him, their voices blending in a chorus of easy, joyful laughter.

I looked back down at my eight-year-old daughter, then up at the framed certificate shining brightly in the autumn sun.

The room was full of light. The house was full of love. And the circle was entirely unbroken.
