Chapter 7 - The Legal Battlefield

The fluorescent lights of the county family courthouse hummed with the dreary, institutional fatigue of a Friday morning.

Three days had passed since I walked out of that downtown penthouse. Three days of emergency legal filings, certified financial audits, and working closely with Marcus Vance to peel back the layers of deception Elena and Richard Sterling had tried to weave around our family.

I sat at the wooden plaintiff's table in Judge Harrison’s courtroom. Beside me sat Sarah Jenkins—a fierce, no-nonsense family law attorney specializing in high-asset custody disputes, whom Marcus had recommended within ten minutes of reviewing my case file.

Across the aisle sat Elena, looking pale and hollow-eyed in a simple beige blazer, flanked by a high-priced associate from Sterling & Croft who looked like he wished he was anywhere else on earth. Richard Sterling himself was notably absent; his firm had wisely decided to distance themselves from a public family court scandal that involved corporate embezzlement and child endangerment.

Judge Harrison—a stern, grey-haired woman with sharp eyes and zero patience for theatrical nonsense—adjusted her reading glasses and looked down from the bench at the stack of documents before her.

"Mr. Miller," Judge Harrison said, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtroom. "Your counsel has filed an emergency ex parte motion for sole temporary physical and legal custody, alongside a restraining order and a petition for asset freezing based on alleged financial fraud and child endangerment."

"Yes, Your Honor," I stood up, buttoning my suit jacket. "The evidence speaks for itself."

"Counsel for the respondent," Judge Harrison turned her gaze to Elena’s lawyer. "Your response?"

The associate attorney stood, shifting uncomfortably under the judge's glare. "Your Honor, while my client deeply regrets the unfortunate lapse in domestic communication, the petitioner's claims of child endangerment are vastly exaggerated. The minor child, Tessa, was fed and cared for, and Mrs. Miller intended only a brief absence—"

"A brief absence that lasted over seven hours, leaving a nine-year-old child to manage an eight-month-old infant while experiencing severe physical exhaustion," Judge Harrison interrupted sharply, cutting the lawyer off mid-sentence. "Counsel, I have read the medical report from the pediatric clinic where Mr. Miller took his daughter that evening. I have also reviewed the sworn affidavit from the neighbor, Mrs. Gable, and the digital logs retrieved from the secondary communication device."

She tapped a finger against the paper on her desk.

"In my thirty years on the bench, I have seen many messy divorces," Judge Harrison continued, her voice hardening with every syllable. "I have rarely seen a parent deliberately weaponize their own nine-year-old child as an unpaid domestic servant under threat of emotional manipulation while conducting an extramarital affair funded by corporate shell accounts."

Elena flinched as if she had been physically struck.

"Therefore," Judge Harrison declared, picking up her heavy wooden gavel, "I am granting the petitioner’s motion in full. Mr. Grant Miller is hereby granted sole temporary physical and legal custody of the minor children, Tessa and Miles. Mrs. Elena Miller is granted supervised visitation only, contingent upon psychological evaluation and court-approved parenting classes. Furthermore, all joint financial accounts and assets linked to Meridian Holdings are frozen pending a full forensic accounting audit."

Thunk.

The gavel came down with a sharp, echoing finality.

"Court is adjourned."
