Chapter 9 - The Reckoning in Court

Six months later, the trial of *The People of the State of Illinois v. Amanda Blake* came to its inevitable conclusion.

The courtroom was packed to the gallery rails with national media, legal scholars, and ordinary citizens who had followed the harrowing case from the moment Emma’s live-stream went viral.

The defense had attempted every conceivable maneuver. They had tried an insanity plea; the court-appointed psychiatric panel found Amanda to be completely sane, possessing a psychopathic narcissistic personality structure characterized by exceptional intelligence and total absence of empathy. They had tried to suppress the cloud recording; Judge Miller had ruled that an emergency public broadcast initiated by a minor victim of domestic violence was fully admissible under the exigent circumstances doctrine.

Now, the jury had returned.

David sat in the front row, his hands clasped firmly in his lap. Beside him sat his brother Thomas and his civil attorney, who had spent the last five months working with FinCEN and the federal bankruptcy courts. Through an extraordinary legal application of the Crime Victims Restitution Act, the federal government had seized all of Amanda’s offshore gold holdings and cryptocurrency wallets, liquidating them to fully discharge David’s fabricated debts, clear the mortgages on his firm, and establish an irrevocable, court-protected multi-million dollar trust fund for Emma, Lily, and Noah.

At the defense table, Amanda stood beside Julian Croft’s court-appointed replacement. She wore a dark blue institutional blazer, but the arrogance had been beaten out of her by six months of solitary confinement. Her fingers twitched at her sides; her eyes darted nervously between the jury box and the bench.

"Will the defendant please rise," Judge Miller ordered.

Amanda stood, her legs slightly unsteady.

"In the matter of Count One: Attempted First-Degree Murder," the jury foreperson, a retired schoolteacher with silver hair, read from the verdict form. "We find the defendant, Amanda Blake... guilty."

A collective murmur rolled through the courtroom.

"Count Two: Aggravated Domestic Battery... guilty."

"Count Three: Aggravated Child Abuse causing Great Bodily Harm... guilty."

"Count Four: Aggravated Child Abuse with a Weapon... guilty."

"Count Five: Conspiracy to Commit Human Trafficking... guilty."

"Count Six through Twenty-Two: Identity Fraud, Grand Theft, and Wire Fraud... guilty on all counts."

Amanda’s knees buckled. The two female bailiffs flanking her immediately caught her arms, holding her upright. She looked toward the gallery, her face pale as parchment, searching for someone—anyone—who might look back with sympathy.

There was no one.

Judge Miller didn't wait for a sentencing hearing. Under Illinois statute for aggravated domestic torture and attempted murder with special enhancements, the sentencing parameters were mandatory.

"Amanda Blake," Judge Miller began, leaning over the bench, his voice echoing off the high oak rafters. "In my decades on the bench, I have seen crimes born of passion, of desperation, of addiction, and of ignorance. But what you brought into your home—what you inflicted upon your innocent children and your husband—was an act of calculated, predatory evil that defies human understanding."

The judge leaned closer to his microphone.

"You viewed the sacred trust of motherhood not as a bond of love, but as a cover for financial extraction and psychological torture. You attempted to destroy a good man’s soul and discard your children like obsolete equipment. You deserve no mercy from this court, and you shall receive none."

The gavel rose.

"On Counts One and Four, you are hereby sentenced to natural life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. You will be remanded to the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections to serve this sentence in maximum security confinement. In addition, this court enters a permanent, irrevocable order of protection barring you from ever contacting, directly or through intermediaries, David Blake, Emma Blake, Lily Blake, or Noah Blake. Furthermore, all parental rights are terminated immediately and forever."

*BANG.*

The gavel struck the sounding block.

May you like

Amanda let out a high, ragged wail—not of remorse, but of total, absolute defeat—as the bailiffs clicked the heavy steel transport irons over her wrists and dragged her through the heavy wooden door into the holding cells, out of the courtroom, and out of the light of the free world forever.
