Chapter 9 - The Garden Proposal

Back at the Cole estate, spring was finally giving way to the warm, vibrant bloom of early summer. The manicured lawns shimmered under the afternoon sun, and the massive fountains in the front courtyard danced with crystal-clear water.

It was a Friday evening, and the staff had already departed for the weekend, leaving the grand manor wonderfully quiet.

I was standing in the private rose garden behind the west wing, clipping a few stray stems from a bush of climbing white roses, when I heard footsteps crunching softly along the gravel pathway.

“You know, for an Estate Director, you spend an awful lot of time doing manual labor,” a familiar, warm voice teased from behind me.

I turned around to see Marcus walking down the path. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the top button open, looking completely at ease, carrying a small silver tray with two glasses of sparkling cider.

“Pruning roses is good for mindfulness, Mr. Cole,” I smiled, setting my pruning shears down on the wooden bench. “It teaches you which branches are strong enough to grow and which ones need to be cut away for the health of the plant.”

Marcus stopped a few feet away, handing me one of the glasses. “A fitting metaphor for the past month.”

We walked slowly toward the stone gazebo overlooking the river, the evening breeze carrying the sweet scent of blooming honeysuckle. Lily was inside the main house, happily occupied with a new set of educational building blocks Marta had given her, leaving us with a rare, peaceful moment of quiet solitude.

Marcus stopped by the edge of the stone railing, looking out across the glowing horizon before turning his gaze back to me.

“Sarah,” he began, his voice suddenly shifting into a softer, more deliberate cadence. “The board meeting last week was just the beginning. The foundation is fully restored, the structural audits are complete, and the estate has never run more smoothly.”

“Thank you,” I said softly, sipping the cider. “Though I couldn't have done it without your trust.”

“It wasn't just trust,” Marcus said, stepping closer until only a few inches separated us. His dark eyes held mine with an intense, unwavering focus. “From the moment I saw you kneeling on that floor in the East Hallway—protecting your daughter, refusing to break under pressure, and standing your ground—I knew you possessed a strength that money could never buy.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Marcus...”

“I’m not talking about business anymore, Sarah,” he murmured, gently taking the glass from my hand and setting it on the stone ledge. He reached out, his warm fingers brushing softly against my cheek—right over the place where the stress of the past had once weighed so heavily. “I’m talking about us. About a home that actually feels like a home for the first time in my life.”

The evening sun dipped below the horizon, casting the garden in a warm, golden twilight.

“You and Lily brought life back into these walls,” Marcus whispered, leaning in close. “And I don't ever want to imagine this estate—or my life—without either of you in it.”

When his lips met mine, the last lingering shadows of my past vanished entirely, replaced by the warmth of a future we were building together.
