Chapter 6 - The Crawlspace

The clearance was barely two and a half feet.

Melissa laid her staff aside, tied the camp lantern to her belt with a strip of torn fabric from her shirt, and slid into the freezing channel on her stomach.

The shock of the water took her breath away. It rushed over her chest, slamming ice into her cracked ribs. A scream caught in her throat, muffled only by sheer willpower. She dug her fingers into the rocky silt bed and dragged herself forward, inch by agonizing inch.

Above her head, jagged points of rock hung like daggers. If the ceiling shifted by half an inch, the granite slab would crush her spine.

"Mom?" Sophie’s voice came from behind, muffled by the stone.

"Keep coming, Sophie! Stay low! Keep your chin up out of the water!"

Melissa clawed at the mud. The current fought against her, pushing debris and dead wood into her face. Her lantern flickered violently, throwing wild, strobing shadows across the drowned rock.

Suddenly, her shoulder wedged tight between two wooden posts.

Panic surged through her veins like fire. She couldn't move forward; her ribs flared with agony as she pushed. The water rose against her jaw, lapping at her mouth.

*No. Not here. Not like this.*

She thought of Daniel standing over the hole, his smug, cowardly face. She thought of her father, turning his back on his own grandchild for a handful of dirt and an insurance payout.

With a ragged, guttural roar, Melissa slammed her right shoulder forward, splintering the rotted wood with pure adrenaline. The timber gave way, and she spilled forward into open air, tumbling onto a gravel bed on the other side.

Coughing and retching water, she scrambled onto her hands and knees.

"Sophie! Now! Crawl!"

A small hand emerged from the opening, followed by Sophie’s dark curls. The girl was kicking fiercely, her face pale, fighting the current with everything she had.

Melissa reached deep into the hole, grabbed Sophie beneath her arms, and hauled her out onto the dry gravel bank just as a sharp *CRACK* resounded from within the crawlspace.

A shower of stones and mud crashed down behind them, completely sealing the passage they had just navigated.

Sophie collapsed against Melissa’s chest, gasping for air, shaking violently from hypothermia. Melissa wrapped her soaked jacket around her daughter, pulling her tightly against her body, using her own fading body heat to warm the child.

"We made it," Melissa whispered through chattering teeth. "We’re through."

Sophie pointed weakly ahead.

Through the darkness of the new tunnel, nearly two hundred yards away, was a tiny, unmistakable speck of deep blue light.
