Chapter 6 - The Forensic Audit

By the following afternoon, the mountain air of Silver Creek had been replaced by the sterile, fluorescent-lit environment of the Park County Sheriff’s precinct in Fairplay, Colorado.

Sophie was sitting at a small table in the breakroom, happily coloring in a stack of cartoon books provided by a sympathetic dispatcher while eating a grilled cheese sandwich.

Meanwhile, inside the main conference room, the true scope of my father and brother’s crimes was beginning to unfold across a massive mahogany table covered in financial ledgers, bank statements, and legal trust deeds.

Marcus Sterling—who had flown in from our corporate headquarters in Washington on a private charter the moment my satellite SOS alert hit our firm’s emergency monitoring system—tapped a thick stack of forensic audit papers with his pen.

“The timing couldn't have been more precise, Lauren,” Marcus said, adjusting his glasses as he looked across the table at Detective Vance, the lead investigator assigned to the attempted murder case. “For the past three years, Richard and Daniel Hale have been systematically siphoning funds out of the Hale Family Trust using forged signatures and dummy corporations registered in the Cayman Islands.”

Detective Vance, a sharp-eyed woman with a permanent scowl, nodded slowly. “And when you refused to sign over your administrative voting rights last month, they realized you were going to discover the multi-million-dollar deficit during the annual audit.”

“Exactly,” I replied, sitting back in my leather chair with a cup of black coffee. “They didn't just want me out of the way for traditional family control. They needed me legally dead so Daniel could assume sole trusteeship, liquidate the remaining land assets, and pay off high-interest gambling debts and failing real estate ventures before the federal regulators stepped in.”

“Well, their timeline just got drastically altered,” Detective Vance said, sliding a copy of the formal arraignment charges across the table. “Both of them are being held at the county detention center without bond. The district attorney has upgraded the charges from attempted murder to include conspiracy, financial fraud, and elder manipulation of trust assets. Because of the paper trail Marcus’s team provided, they aren't just looking at prison time—they’re looking at decades.”

I looked down at the documents. My father’s signature—arrogant, sweeping, and entirely confident—appeared on dozens of fraudulent asset transfers.

He had spent my entire life teaching me that family loyalty was absolute, that the patriarch's word was law, and that daughters were merely temporary assets to be managed until they were handed off to someone else.

And yet, when it came down to survival and greed, he had tried to throw his own flesh and blood down a mine shaft to protect his failing empire.

“What happens to the trust now?” I asked.

“Under the emergency receivership clause of the Hale Family Trust, because the primary trustee—your father—has been indicted for a capital felony against a beneficiary, administrative control reverts entirely to the surviving senior heir,” Marcus explained smoothly. “You. Solely and unconditionally.”

I let out a slow, steady breath.

The legacy my grandfather had actually built—land meant to protect and sustain our family, not fund my brother’s reckless lifestyle—was finally back where it belonged.
