Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

Summer arrived in Connecticut with a gentle, ocean breeze that carried the sound of distant waves and children laughing down the street.

We hosted a small barbecue for our new neighbors and close friends—real people who brought homemade potato salad, shared stories without hidden agendas, and welcomed us into their lives with genuine warmth. There were no long-winded toasts about bloodlines, no passive-aggressive insults masked as family culture, and no fear of making a mistake.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of amber, violet, and gold, I sat on the wooden deck with a glass of lemonade in my hand, watching Emma chase a golden retriever across the lawn.

My phone rested silently on the patio table. No alerts from lawyers, no frantic messages from broken family members, and no threats from the past.

Daniel walked out from the kitchen carrying a tray of fresh grilled skewers, setting them down on the table before walking over to sit beside me. He took my hand, his fingers intertwining naturally with mine, his touch warm, steady, and entirely secure.

“Penny for your thoughts?” he asked quietly, smiling down at me.

I looked out over the lawn at our daughter, who was laughing as she tossed a tennis ball across the grass, completely free, completely loved, and completely at home.

“I was just thinking about math, Daniel,” I replied, a slow, genuine smile spreading across my face.

He raised an eyebrow, amused. “Math? On a Saturday night?”

“Just auditing our assets,” I said, leaning my head against his shoulder as the evening breeze rustled the leaves of the trees overhead. “And it turns out, we are infinitely richer than we ever imagined.”
