Chapter 5 - The Grand Ballroom Ambush

The annual California Hospitality Leaders Gala at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco was the most prestigious corporate event of the season.

Under normal circumstances, it was an evening of back-slapping, seven-course dinners, and self-congratulatory speeches. Tonight, however, it was an arena.

The grand ballroom on Nob Hill was bathed in amber chandelier light, filled with six hundred executives, investors, politicians, and socialites. When Graham and I stepped through the arched entryway at eight o'clock on Friday evening, a sudden, electric hush rippled through the sea of black tuxedos and designer gowns.

We were the story of the year.

The story of the bride who had been abandoned at the altar, only to marry the Chairman twenty minutes later, while thirty-seven million dollars vanished into the Caribbean.

Graham looked formidable. His bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo fit his broad frame with razor-sharp perfection, his posture rigid and commanding. Beside him, I was not playing the victim.

I wore a backless, liquid-gold silk gown that pooled at my feet, skimming every curve of my body with unapologetic elegance. My hair was styled in vintage Hollywood waves over one shoulder, and around my neck hung a platinum-and-diamond choker from Graham’s family collection that caught the light like crushed stars.

I did not look like a woman who had spent the week crying into a pillow.

I looked like an empress who had just conquered a province.

“They’re staring,” I murmured, my hand resting comfortably in the crook of Graham’s arm.

“Let them stare,” Graham replied softly, his lips barely moving as he nodded to an appellate judge near the bar. “
