Chapter 7 - The True Meaning of Family

On Lily’s first birthday in late June, there were no opulent banquet halls or pretentious crystal chandeliers.

The celebration took place in the backyard of Denise’s modest bungalow in Lakewood. Bunting hung between two blossoming apple trees, colorful balloons drifted in the summer breeze, and the air smelled of homemade lemon cake and grilled burgers.

Cousin Emily, who had risked Patricia’s wrath by making the phone call that brought Clara to Denver, was there, laughing as she chased Lily across the lush grass. Grandma Margaret sat beneath the shade of an umbrella, wearing a light summer linen dress, a soft smile resting on her face as she watched her great-granddaughter giggle in delight.

Clara sat beside her grandmother, holding a glass of iced tea.

“You’ve done remarkable work with the pediatric fund, Clara,” Margaret said, reaching over to pat her hand. “Three hundred families received grants this month alone.”

“It’s what Evan would have done, Grandma,” Clara said softly, looking at the silver pendant around her neck holding a tiny photograph of her late husband. “He used to fix cars for single mothers in his garage for free whenever he knew they couldn't afford parts. He always said, 'If you have hands to help, you don't keep them in your pockets.'”

Margaret’s eyes softened with tears. “He was a good man, Clara. A far better man than anyone who ever looked down on him from behind a marble counter.”

Lily came tottering across the lawn on chubby, steady legs, holding up a yellow dandelion with a bright, triumphant smile. She stumbled straight into Clara’s lap, pressing the crushed flower against her mother’s chest.

“Dandy!” Lily chirped proudly.

Clara laughed, tears of joy stinging her eyes as she pulled her daughter tight, burying her face in the sweet, clean scent of Lily’s hair.
